    The concept had been tried in 1917 when the RNAS fitted out two HP O100 bombers with additional mounts for Lewis guns (and extra gunners) more than doubling their firepower and sent them to lurk off the Belgian coast for returning German Gothas that had been raiding London. They were quite successful as the Gothas were low on fuel so had limited ability to manoeuvre. However it was decided that this activity was outside the remit of the RNAS (which was fighting a turf war with the RFC) and the O100s were reassigned to bombing duties.
