I've looked at insignia and have not found any German using a "dark" star -it is of course the Soviet guards insignia, still spending time trying to find the other photo of this scene which might show something.

Does anyone have any info on the vehicle make up of German engineer units? I have found some good detailed ones for the IJN/IJA and of course for the US.

From Richard's Rhodes "Masters of Death": The 4 Einsatzgruppen were given equipment priority by Himmler with full motorization. However, these 4 death units did not have bulldozers or engineering equipment that would have greatly facilitated the digging and burial for mass graves. 40 shovels were carried along in trucks for each death squad within each EG.

Perhaps the general lack of heavy German engineering equipment turned out to save many lives as much time was wasted using capitives to slowly dig trenches?

Seems like the Japanese were better equipped for construction than the Germans. Now, that is a real twist.... and really just pathetic on the German's part.

About half way down page 1 on this thread on another board is a picture of a German air compressor on some rather unique wheels and a real steam roller (it's steam powered and an antique by WW 2).

I'll leave it up to the enterprising JCF III to transfer them if he wishes since I seem to have problems doing that.

That's the air compressor. The steam roller is just below it. Look at those wheels! That thing has got to be antique.
