These are euro-zone privates (got the pun hu?? subtel am I not??) you'll have to join the party in orther to understand. Cheers...
Couldn't resist showing you chaps this one- the proposed British prototype for the Ecu (European Currency Unit) from the early '90s. I bought it back in the days when I collected British silver bullion proofs, but this is only base metal (I think).
The Euro wasn't named Ecu for the simple reason that in Portuguese "Ecu" sounds exactly like "It's an arse". A bit impolitical, I dare say. And this is true, I'm not making it up! Richard, you'll have to watch the entire rerun of Monty Python in order to begin understanding what humour is. Oh, you are a Pom already... Maybe you'll have to watch it twice...
8 years on since this thread started & the £ nearly equals a €. I see the best exchange rate to buy the € at the Post Office is £1 = €1.0815 if you but more than a £1000 worth of Euros. http://www.postoffice.co.uk/foreign-currency?tmad=c&tmcampid=486&campaignid=PPC_FX_0001&gclid=CLGC38Po388CFWQq0wodpbMNdQ&gclsrc=aw.ds
Unfortunately companies and banks are slow and reluctant to update their currency rates. I wish I had an effective 1.08 rate, I'm not even aiming at 1 vs 1 .
