Always Liked the looks of the Mig-25.Very nice plane and ofcourse very fast . O and speacking of TopGun I have a Saturday Night live thing here about Iceman the Later years http://www.usafitz.com/SupportingPages/iceman.htm very funny if you saw the movie .
English Electric Lightning would be my personal favourite if you examine it in its era - certainly not compared to aircraft later in the cold war though but the cold war was pretty long and saw much development so we shouldn't really be comparing Lightnings to F14s, for example, but rather looking at planes in the context of how well they could do their job at the time when they were expected to it. On that basis, I'm also a bit partial to the Mig 15, Super Sabre and the Hawker Hunter.
Trouble with the Hunter (a beauty of a plane) is that it was toast in aerial combat with most of its contemporaries. I remember reading an article in an Aeroplane magazine by an RAF pilot whose Hunter squadron went to Pakistan and flew against PAF F-86 Sabres. The Sabres won almost every time - the Hunters only won if they could get the Sabres to slow down enough to be at a disadvantage (the Hunter aerobatted best at slower speeds than the Sabre).
Hmm.. opinions may be divided on that one - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Hunter Which suggests that bomb laden Hunters at extreme range may have been a factor (I must admit that this does sound like an excuse). Also, I find the following very surprising re the Folland "Sabre Slayer" Gnat - a less capable fighter than the Hunter ? Maybe not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folland_Gnat
I see I'm one of the few who has my fav Cold War fighter as an option. I voted for the F-105 Thunderchief. But you've missed out more than a few classics Blaster.
How many airplanes do you think the average human brain can remember at one time, Varyag? No one's perfect. To Hoosier: The majority of Thud kills were acheived with a Vulcan cannon!? The F105 is incredible! I don't think there's any other plane that's ever done that. Score a kill majority with a cannon! But the Migs had missiles! What a great aircraft to go with a cool name.
Personally I'd take the Arrow (what? ) but.... Since it never saw actual service I'd take the Starfighter...also know as the Widowmaker (or was that something else?) the leading edge is so sharp that if it weren't for the paint, one whould slice their finger open by running it down the edge.
Lemme try... P-51, P-47, P-38, XFY-1 Pogo, B-1 “Blinder B”, B-2, F-117 “Stealth Fighter”, Have Blue (F-117 Prototype), FW-190, BF-109, BF-110, ME-262, ME-363, Komet, P-80, F-16, F-14, F-15, F-18, F-22, Mig-29, Avro arrow, E-3 Sentry, SR-71, Volksjager, Cessna 172, Cessna 150, Cessna 152, Cessna 180 (real?), Piper Cub, A-10, F-111, F-104, F-104, Mosquito, Spitfire, Seafire, Hurricane, Vampire, D-3/C-17, B-24, B-25, B-52, B-36. I got to 44 not counting X-series, WW1 and more expermetal stuff before I got bored. (about 5 minutes or so) Does this mean I'm Perfect, Stupid, Bored, or any combination of the three.
As my teacher always says, there's no perfect, there's only life. But you're not stupid either. I say bored would probably be the best word. But I didn't have the time to think of so many planes.

Avro Arrow was never a Cold War fighter, never moved beyond development flight testing. The Canadian government (after a change from Liberal to Conservative) stopped the program and destroyed all the flight test/pre-production aircraft. It never flew with the Iroquois engine, which is what would have nade it really special, and the inability to develop and deploy an advanced missile weapons system (late 1950's style) was what finally killed the program.
