I think i've said before...Australia has the most camels in the world - Wealthy Arabs buy them off us for their own herds. - Some are pet food...Brought over by Afghans in the 1800s to open up Australia. Its estimated there are about 300k camels roaming around Australia.
Those beauties seem to be in a lot better shape than the ones I ... met ... when I was supporting the USN mine clearing helos making the Suez safe after peace broke out back in the ' 70s. Animals in human custody should look better than the ferals IMNSHO.
The railway that travels through Australia (Adelaide to Darwin) has always been called "The Ghan", named after the Afghans who brought their camels to open up Australia... Its one of those "must do" train trips of the world.
The press just love this apocalyptic stuff, don't they? The discovery itself was exciting enough for me; would have liked more on it. "A team of scientists has pinpointed one of the biggest solar storms to have hit Earth to 664 BC in what could be a timely warning after the northern lights were visible farther south than usual this year and as the sun enters a solar maximum period. Researchers from the University of Arizona looked at tree rings to determine the time of the storm, which saw Earth battered by a burst of solar radiation so intense that if repeated tomorrow, "would wreak havoc on power grids, satellites and communication networks around the globe," according to the team. The 664 BC flare was likely far more intense than even the so-called Carrington Event of 1859, which took place after Earth was hit by a coronal mass ejection of plasma from the sun - a burst of energy bigger than even the biggest solar flare - during a solar maximum. The event was spectacular: aurora borealis or northern lights were visible in the tropics and people could read at night in the Northern Hemisphere. Ominously, however, the electronics and telecommunications of the day - telegraphs, for example - were fried. If a similarly intense burst were imminent now, flights would have to be grounded and the world's electricity grids and linked infrastructure powered down in advance... ...To accurately date the 664 BC event, Panyushkina and her colleagues examined ancient tree remnants and wood samples, burning the cellulose to determine the levels of radiocarbon - which increases when solar energy goes up - and compared the findings to data on spikes of the isotope beryllium-10 in ice cores. Much like radiocarbon in trees, beryllium-10 "forms in the atmosphere due to an onslaught of particles from the sun" before being trapped in ice, the team said. The team's research was funded by NASA, the European Union and the Hungarian government and the findings published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, a Nature publication." Should we worry? Ancient solar storm dated as sun turns volatile
Never knew such things existed- "Extremely rare, black "anti-auroras" helped create a peculiar E-shaped swirl of green light recently photographed over Alaska, experts say. Aurora hunter Todd Salat spotted the unusual aurora on Nov. 22 above an unspecified location in southcentral Alaska at around 4 a.m. local time (8 a.m. EST). The luminous letter appeared seemingly out of nowhere and lasted for a few minutes while cycling through several shapes, all of which contained strange dark patches not seen in most auroras. "It came up from the northwest and I was like, 'whoa!' It looked like the letter E to me," Salat told Spaceweather.com. "Within just a few minutes it sailed overhead on its back and looked like some critter with its legs in the air." The unusual aurora is the result of anti-auroras, a.k.a. black auroras. The strange phenomenon creates the rounded dark patches that look as if they have been bitten out from between the arms of the 'E' shape, Spaceweather.com reported. As the name implies, anti-auroras are essentially the opposite of an aurora — they prevent gases from giving off energy in the form of light. The result is "dark rings, curls or blobs that punctuate the glowing colors," according to the European Space Agency (ESA)... ...However, anti-auroras interrupt the aurora-forming process by starving gases of charged particles. "The black aurora isn't actually an aurora at all; it's a lack of auroral activity in a region where electrons are 'sucked' from the ionosphere," Goran Marklund, a plasma physicist at Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, previously told ESA." Extremely rare, black 'anti-auroras' paint luminous 'letter E' above Alaska
Not an actual hole as such- "The mechanism behind these cells remained elusive for well over a decade, until a 2015 study utilizing more than a decade of Cluster mission data showed that these structures form when auroras deplete plasma, creating "ionospheric cavities," in the upper atmosphere while the magnetosphere shifts from the strain caused by solar storms. However, the conditions have to be just right for anti-auroras to appear." The 2015 study is interesting but highly technical- Magnetospheric signatures of ionospheric density cavities observed by Cluster - Russell - 2015 - Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics - Wiley Online Library This one's a bit closer to English- A new auroral phenomenon, the anti-black aurora | Scientific Reports
Yeah I know. Stupid interweb. I'll try again. Our IQ is steadily declining " The phenomenon of declining IQ scores was detected early in Norway. Now researchers are seeing the same trend in other countries. The researchers don’t know what’s behind it. Proposals vary widely. Jon Martin Sundet (81) is a psychology professor and arguably Norway's leading IQ researcher over many years. When we ask him why, he answers calmly, Does it really matter?” And there's the rub.
The greatest learning tool ever devised is to blame. Why learn maths when you have a calculator? Something asked in the 80s... Why learn about anything if i can google it when needed? General knowledge and the mind expansion that comes with it is now missing...Some US students can't even identify the map of continental USA when shown..."What country is this?" - Um..."China?" Knowledge and intelligence is being scorned instead of revered...Once AI and supercomputers take over, you can expect our IQs to take a massive dive...Remember the movie Wall-E? A bunch of super fat people in hover seats getting excited about the new drink flavour coming out...
And you see how we vote here now. Common Sense seems to be an incomprehensible concept. And this BS of calling Mathematics 'maths' irks me to no end. "Oh I've got an idea, Let's change up things to show we're highly educated idjits who due to our substantial monetary investments gotta be more smarter than the common people.
In other News " Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) gave an update on the downed Ingenuity Mars helicopter on Wednesday (Dec. 11) during the 2024 Annual Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in Washington, D.C. After traveling to Mars attached to the Perseverance rover, Ingenuity began a test flight campaign to prove that powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere was possible. After almost three years of operating on the Red Planet, Ingenuity crashed during its 72nd flight on Jan. 18, 2024, suffering rotor damage that rendered it incapable of ever flying again. But after conducting the "first aircraft investigation on another world," Ingenuity's mission managers at JPL say the helicopter could have a second life on the Red Planet. "We are very proud to report that, even after the hard landing in flight, 72 avionics battery sensors have all been functional, and she still has one final gift for us, which is that she's now going to continue on as a weather station of sorts, recording telemetry, taking images every single sol and storing them on board," said Teddy Tzanetos, Ingenuity's project manager at JPL, during the team's presentation at AGU. Despite its crash, Ingenuity proved to be wildly successful. The helicopter was designed to make only five flights on Mars, and ended up making 72. Because it was only a flight demonstrator, the helicopter was not designed to carry science instruments. But JPL is already looking to the future of powered flight on Mars. During today's presentation at AGU, JPL scientists presented a video of a new Red Planet helicopter concept known as Mars Chopper. After crashing on Mars, NASA's Ingenuity helicopter could live on as a weather station for 20 years
And this BS of calling Mathematics 'maths' irks me to no end. Like MANY things...The US is the ONLY country to call it Math...It irks the rest of the world believe me.
