I totally agree Gordon , not many people can say their life hasnt been touched in some way by mental illness , whether it be a relative or friend or indeed themselves. Theres a world of difference between mentally ill and criminally ill.A personality disorder it may be , but doesnt that all boil down to being mentally ill albeit with criminal intent. Dr jeckyll and Mr Hide , schizophrenia ,personality disorder or mentally ill ? I honestly dont know but suspect at some point it boils down to being mentally ill. Believe me..im not trying to pardon these types by saying they are ill , but if they are not ill...hardly bears thinking about
Personality disorders and mental illness are VERY different (having lived with someone with a serious narcicistic personality disorder for quite a while I've seen it). That said, my point is that just because something is 'abnormal' doesn't make it an illness. By that logic any unusual personality trait becomes an 'illness' whatever it may be. An illness is a disease, a sickness, not simply 'something different from the rest of society.' I think your last line however is very telling, as soon as you start to accept that these people are not 'ill' you suddenly have the very real problem to deal with, i.e. the fact that humans can be vile, evil, revolting animals. Not a nice realisation!
Garry Glitter still alive? If before reading this thread - I would have said the fellow died on AIDS 10 years ago. AFAIK Garry is a gay (Propably I might be wrong again...see above) - so why should he be interested in fumbleing around on minor girls? Well anyway his song writes sure got nothing to do with his deads or livestyle. Regards Kruska
Your right Stefan , and i dont think any should lose sight of the fact. Dunno if Gadd was ever gay Kruska or claimed to be.He was part of whats now known as Glam rock. He was certainly convicted for having relations with a 9yr old and a 12yr old females. Thats just the ones he was convicted on.If memory serves he was headed for a firing squad until something occured to lesson the sentence. The media at the time suggested a bribe or gift of money to the offended familys put paid to a harsher sentence.
1) The difference between a musician and a song writer is that a songwriter usually ends up wealthier. I was too late to catch the guy's name, but he had been one of the Eagles (famous rock band). Unlike Glenn Frey and a few of the others, he wasn't a songwriter and his life hadn't gone so well since the band slowed down. 2) The difference between pedophile and child molester is that one lives a life of fantasy. The other acts on his fantasies. When the "sex offender" laws were first written in the US to put together registries, there were a few guys forced to register because they had mooned someone during a frat party or event. Is that fair? If a guy prefers the company of children, but he conciously avoids public pools, public parks, shopping malls, arcades and YMCA's, does that still make him a monster? 3) In World War 2, my mother married at age 15. That was quite common then. In the 1970's, while I was coming of age, there was a very large shortage of young teen girls to date because wealthy uranium miners were snapping them up as wives. As a child, I had a close female friend who married at age 12 because some Army guy knocked her up (back then, there was no law against sex with minors. If you got a 12 year old pregnant, you were required to marry her).
It still makes him pretty weird. Not sure how it is a relevant distinction anyhow because GG was convicted of abusing two young girls one of whom was just 9yo. Yeah, societies moral standards change, hell, Juliette (as in 'Romeo and...') was meant to be about 12 and was regarded as old. In ancient Rome girls in their early teens were expected to be married already. I think however that when you look at this in a wider context and see that at these times women had few actual rights and were often regarded as property, it makes a bit more sense. We have different morals and values, as a society we feel that people below a certain age aren't ready to make decisions like that and so need protecting from their own mistakes and from others. I guess that's the way the world changes. That said using 'it was ok until recently' arguments can get very dubious
