I agree USMCPrice, the question of sexual preference was a "non-starter" in the years of conscription. Only after the all volunteer service came into being was that even considered as a "problem".

I recall that one of the questions on the original 1940 draft list was something to the effect of "do you like girls?". A negative response would make you "ineligible to serve on moral grounds". That leaves open, as you mentioned those who remained "in the closet" and served with no problems with their fellows.

For my opinion is the question of closing out Gay or Lesbians from military service extremly oldstyled and out. The only thing which counts to my eyes is the qualification of a person and its character. And urqh in on one or the other way you´re right that no one should run with a silly "Hooray" into war like the men in WW1 did. And the other point is that there won´t be a war like the WW1 or WW2 was. It is more asymetric and no longer a war between nations for their religion or racial theories. It will change into smaller wars for economy or against terrorist or nations which are known as their supporters. The whole thing has changed. Support your troops and your country but not without getting some important questions answered.

My opinion is simple; no one who wishes to serve his or her country should be denied that right. Many US citizens in WW2 were denied that right because of sexual orientation. I'd be willing to go with Price's numbers, but these men (primarily) served their country with honor and distinction.

Q: Can gay people serve their country as well as any straight person?
A: Alan Turing & TE Lawrence.

    Good enough for me.

do u have proof to that statement?

The gestapo did a very good job weeding out any known and suspected "undesirables" as they called it. yes there were homosexuals in ww2 and in the Nazi forces as there is all around the world... However to say they were "allowed" to fight is a little far fetched. They had to keep secret about their sexual preferance and do whatever it took to keep it that way. Many people don't realize that Paragraph 175 was not created by the Nazis... The German law forbidding homosexaul acts between males was in fact created in May 15 1871. it wasn't until March 10 1994 that this law was officially abolished.

Unfortunately, after the liberation of the camps, most of the homosexauls were not released. They were re-incarcerated and put into prisons and served the remainder their sentance.

(Edit - just realized this thread is really old.. I'm pretty sure he ain't gonna provide proof. lol)
