From; The Blockhouse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "The book and film appear to have been inspired by a possibly true story: on June 25, 1951, Time magazine reported that two German soldiers claimed to have been trapped for six years in an underground storehouse in Babie Doły, Poland" and the Time magazine article; POLAND: In Babie Doly - TIME here's the May 1958 Der Spiegel article; http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-41760577.html they reckoned that two got out heres the original thread on ww2f; http://ww2f.com/wwii-general/21523-unbelievable-story.html maybe they need a merge?
Due to the Chilean Mine incident I've been thinking a lot about this story recently, I guess it's essentially confirmed now?
i'm not totally sure - i think i'd expect to see a photo if it was true, but that doesn't mean it isn't.
Thanks to Spartanroller I find my mind validated. Like Mehar, the Chilian rescue operation made me recall the bunker entrapment. I appreciate the rapid response. Juergen
So it could be true after all? Poor man if he really lived like that during all those years. We will probably never know and unless someone comes here with convincing evidence I will still have doubts.
Do any forum goers live in Poland or are planning a trip there? If so, why not visit the nearby town (Babie Doly I believe). There should be local residents old enough to remember the discovery or at least have heard of it from those that were present (children, grandchildren, etc). Something else to focus on would be finding a list of bunkers in Poland and if there are any near the town. Might be a long shot but what about contacting German sources such as newspapers who reported on the incident, government offices, etc?
