Sgt.Bob: I always heard it refverred to as "scratching each-other's back." It referred to the following tank spraying the tank in front with machine-gun fire to rid it of any infantry infestation... and being careful not to damage any sensitive areas like vison-blocks. Tim
just having a browse on member websites, and came across this one: http://pic6.piczo.com/ArmourMania/?g=19276206&cr=6 which is the site of Sniper2k6, one of our newest members. On the main page is a similar diagram to the Panther - for a Tiger. Take a look, see what you think...
As you can clearly see, those diagrams were made for the common population of tank commanders. It only shows spot on the two models on where the most damage would be done to the crew, and to immobilize the AFV. Of course though, engaging both is cautioned, and discouraged. Especially the AT. The shots to the main hull and above would do the most damage to the crew. Not necessarily damaging the AFV, but stunning the crew quite thoroughly. Remeber that the first shot could stun a crew badly, creating a gap between the return fire ,possibly allowing the commander to fire a second shot, either destroying the tank or fumbling the crew inside the enemy tank up. See those side shots? they are meant to breach the corner armor seals. The shell would most likley penetrate there. Machine gun fire on those spots would have also been effective, and much easier.... Plus, the different colored shots are meant to signify different shell sizes.
Update to the above, there are two more such pictures on this website: http://pic6.piczo.com/ArmourMania/?g=19379562&cr=6 If anyone here could translate the Russian text for us (Tiso?) that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!
