Ok you got me, what is the difference between the cap eagle on the picture I doctored to the picture of the genuine Heer cap I posted on 11/12 other than the colour?
Brat, this picture should help: http://www.landser.com/inc/pdetail?v=1&pid=455 As you see, the first eagle is the one you have on your hat. That is an SS eagle. The middle eagle is the Heer eagle you're going to need if you're putting together a Heer cap. The third eagle is a Luftwaffe eagle. Both the Luftwaffe and the Heer eagle uses the cockade you purchased underneath. The SS has the deaths head replacing the cockade. Hope this helps! Langemann [ 15. Well you learn something new every day mate...thanks! Call me a fool but I never noticed the difference till now. The SS eagle definitely looks MEANER For the purposes of this thread and future ignoramuses like me here is an edited picture! [ 15. December 2003, 02:27 PM: Message edited by: BratwurstDimSum ]
If it were the other way round it wouldnt matter so much, many SS men used Heer eagles on their crusher caps.
I've finally bit the bullet and bought the cap. DDR/East German just don't look right now that I have seen better. (No stefan, I'm [/b]still not buying a swiss tunic ) Its coming from Germany, which I thought was appropriate , all i need now is a heer eagle but I'll purchase that when I get the cockade and cap together. Photo will follow when the ensemble is complete! Thanks guys.
*BUMP* for BDS This is as good a place as any to let you guys know I have been having a busy couple of weeks, its sort of kept me off the site but I will be back soon enough.
Thanks for that Stefan, a victim of my own forum incompetance. Anyway I got my hat today, just waiting on the heer hat badge...thanks all for your ideas. Stefan, is this the right way to crush the cap?
Hi, I remember picking up an immediate post-war Reed Green Denim Einheitsfeldmutze (that's the Afrika Korps style one, right?) at an antiques fair years ago. There was no insignia, and although I asked various people no-one was sure if it was a reused wartime cap or a peacetime copy. The label was original, but one guy reckoned it was a bus company issue! I'll stick to Battle dress in future...... Regards, Gordon
I have a similar story, although about a tunic. I sold one recently on ebay for £98 (thats approx $180) It was a herringbone reed-green denim tropical outfit which would have gone with your cap. It had no insignia (only the stitching outline of a bevo eagle), no shoulder boards and it was ripped inside. The only other clue was the german maker stamped inside. I got it for £3 at a local militaria fair
Nice cap, one suggestion, well, a couple: First off take any metal shaper out of the hat Secondly, get a coathanger and put it in as a replacement shaper, then bend it to the shape you want so that when you aren't wearing it it will shape itself Alternatively you can just pull the sides (with the white pipeing on them) down over the outside and then shove it between two books for a couple of months. Another option is to remove the lining (which tends to make the caps springy) and do all I described above. Actually, there is no right way to shape them when you think about it, I wore mine and shoved it in my belt which crushed it naturally. Some prefer to wear them uncrushed (and look like bus conductors. As for post war kit, the einheitzfeldmutz (blinking long difficult to spell names, why couldnt they stick to british names like 'hat') was just a field grey had with a peak and a fold down skirt. The problem with German stuff like that is that so much of it was used by different forces, the police and fire brigade for example, so you don't know if you are getting post war police or fire kit. Historian, if you can find a photo I would be happy to offer my amateur opinion.
Good suggestion about the hanger mate, I'll try that...dunno about the removing liner though, it will just end up turning into a balaclava if I did that!
ok here it is, I'm going to try and buff back the cap eagle a bit as it doesn't look a worn as the cockade but it will do for now. I hope it is sufficiently squashed!
Nice, very nice. Just fold it and tuck it into your belt every now and then and it will become a crusher naturally.
Reed green denim - interesting. I think DAK caps had red cloth liners in them (something to do with transferring heat away from the head and arrived at after careful experiments by the tropical institute in Germany - true! I had a Bundeswehr cap in green herringbone twill with tan liner once but as far as I'm aware, the Heer maily used the standard wool EHFM with the HBT suit. I will now await the replies to the contrary but in my defence, I've only the one book and it's out of date.....
