    Thx :)

As you (probably ;) ) know, in the 19th century Poland was literally erased form the maps of Europe as it was divided between Germany, Russia and Austria. Most coutries of the world accepted it and those that didn't - e.g. Turkey - were to weak thus Poles had to fight for their (our) independence alone. We tried a few uprisings, none, however, were successful.

One of them was the January Uprising in 1863 (against Russia). During it we almost got England's promise of help, maybe even not only diplomatic. The condition was that... a ship under the Polish flag had to appear at sea. Due to England's long maritime traditions, they would accept Poland's status as an existing and fighting country.

So... Polish patriots in England bought a ship, hired a crew and set sail. The commander had a "great" idea to raise the flag... in the Mediterrenean Sea. There the ship could also help some people in the Caucasus, who were also fighting against Russia.

The ship, however, did not reach its destination. My question is: why? What happened to it?

Considering political machinations of the time and empire building it was probably sunk by

    a) Britain
    b) France
    c) Germany

No. I was not sunk by an enemy ship, neither did it sink due to a storm or sth.

Looks like nobody want to answer. Maybe I'll tell you that the ship did manage to go through the Sriats of Gibraltar, but did not reach the Balearic Islands. Waht happend, happened between these two locations.

No. The Uprising ended in summer-autumn 1864, more than a year after the event we're "discussing". ;)

Moths/Weavils/Rats/(insert name of other shipboard creature here) had eaten the flag?

(Or they realised they'd left it behind?)

    None of the above

This one is quite close in a patricular way as what happened, happened because of an intervention of a certain country.

The "certain country" was not mentioned by Cholbert.

No. As I said, the ship was not sunk (well, maybe eventually it was :D but not in the period we're talking about and long after the Polish crew and flag were removed from it). Of course a "date" with a foreign navy doesn't have to mean sinking but it's also not the right answer.

BTW: this post also contains a hint.
