Just goes to show that you should never trust one source for anything. [/cranky]

Those bad captions came from a book of pix purportedly taken by Steichen's mob. I'll have to go through them with a fine-tooth comb now and correct them.

With regards to poor captioning, cv6.org and the Read Controversy.

From the cv6.org article on the Read controversy
If you look at the photo and then watch the youtube video. You will see that at 3:35-3:36. The two are one and the same. The details all match, the railing, the one large vertical support, and the large pipe at the bottom of the photo. As this all happened after Read was killed, the camera pans away from the destruction of the previous bomb hits, so its not spliced together, the photo would be impossible to attribute to Read.

Yes, no one is immune to bad captioning. What's the old adage "Trust, but verify"

Isnt there another movie clip of the Hornet, Yorktown or Enterprise taking a bomb hit (torpedo?) somewhere on the middle or front of the ship, with a F4F parked near the back; and you can see how the bomb shock waves upon the hull nearly "bounce" the plane off the deck?

I swear Ive seen it on TV, but cant find it on youtube.

From my perspective as an "AIRDALE" this pilot did a great job of bring this thing back aboard wounded and shot up. We all know the snipes are only there so air ops can happen!:D

It was a SBD, not a F4F. With regard to the photo in the original post, that was included in a report I found and posted to my site a while back; you can read it here.
