I do know it; the old (=previous) name of Gdansk is Danzig, this name is German. Earlier it would be called Gyddanyzc, Kdansk, Gdanzc, Dantzk, Dantzig, Dantzigk, Dantiscum, Gedanum or finaly, in Latin, Gedania. The last one sounds pretty nice but I'm for the current name.
Hard to pronounce? Then call it Gedania. Still many Poles associate "Danzig" with the obviously unpleasant times of Nazi occupation. I can't blame them... And if a foreigner uses this name in Poland, he's bound to be taken for a German (at least according to my observations).

Airwolf have you ever seen the WWII poster Danzig is German? Actually I translated it , it was Danzig ist Deutsch.

I have. I even have a reproduction (reprint? What should be the word) of it at home. That's exactly why it's a bit risky to use the word "Danzig" in Poland if you are not German - then you're obviously excused, since it's the name of the city in your language.

At my previous sudies I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by prof. Timothy Garton Ash, a British expert in especially eastern European politics. Though the lecture was devoted to a completely different issue, he did spend a minute or two to the name of Gdańsk. It's his remark on the "riskiness" that I've quoted above.

BTW: aren't we getting far off the topic? :>
