Found this interesting looking book last week! The Luftwaffe's Fighter-Bombers The tip and run campaign over Britain, 1942-1943 Chris Goss with Peter Cornwell and Bernd Rauchbach ISBN: 0 947554 97 1 As the Battle of Britain was coming to a close, the Luftwaffe found merit in arming its single-engined fighters with bombs, using them in preference to twin-engined bombers against many daylight targets. In 1941, these attacks tailed off but in the Spring of 1942, recommenced, initially against shipping and coastal targets. Two units were designated for these jagdbomber (literally fighter-bomber) attacks-10/JG 2 and 10/JG 26 and the targets were extended to include railways, gas holders and selected military and civilian installations. The detrimental affect on British morale caused by what was known as 'Tip and Run' attacks was great. The Luftwaffe's Fighter-Bombers analyses the campaign from September 1942 - June 1943 highlighting, among others, unopposed attacks on London, Yeovil, Salisbury, the Isle of Wight, Great Yarmouth, Torquay and Bournemouth. Both the raid on Dieppe and the sinking of HMS Berkeley by 10/JG 2 are examined using contemporary records and first hand accounts from both the German and British sides. Tactics are considered from both attacker and defender viewpoints, their successes and failures and corresponding impact. Using previously unpublished photographs, the majority of which are German (some even showing the air attacks as seen from the cockpits of German aircraft), the book tackles a previously unpublished aspect of the World War II air war. http://www.crecy.co.uk/en-us/dept_41.html
Chris Goss' series of books about Luftwaffe operations over Britain are highly regarded. His two previous books dealing with the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain are really good - looking at a familiar subject from a different angle. Looks like Santa's going to be busy...
I like the Halifax book title called It's Suicide But It's Fun ! I think I will buy that one for Christmas as I am a big Halifax fan. The other books look great too but the old check book is alittle light, as usual.
I'll let you into a secret, Ta - there is a book I don't have ! It's 'From Hull, Hell & Halifax ' by Chris Blanchett and is an illustrated history of 4 Group Halifax ops. It's now scarce and sought-after and whenever I see a copy the price is just that little bit too high....
"It´s suicide but it´s fun"...must say a "great" name for the book.... Maybe time for a thread of great book names...
Another well-known title, oddly enough, also about Halifax ops & from the same publisher, is 'Only Owls And Bloody Fools Fly At Night' by Grp. Capt. Tom Sawyer DFC.
I know another book like that; "How Jerry was kicking Tommy's ass in autumn 1940" by Grp. Capt. Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain's DSO...
