and the pinko anti-war do-gooders ..................... Hang on...thats me....I resemble that remark....
Keep writing. Remember...simply by waking up this morning, you stepped on somebody's toes. Say what you believe, state your case with reason/logic/wisdom, and you'll not lose anybody's respect around here, whether or not they agree with you.
Dont be daft, I was being sarcastic...its what we Brits do matey....But hey it does resemble me...I'm probably more of a pinko anti war geezer than most...I have reason like some others probably do too...Its not an insult matey...Its a badge I'll wear with pride...You cant go around here not insulting folk...I do it all the time...heres one for you...Yanks go home....Its one I've just made up.....bet it catches on though....You gotta laugh mate..or Jugs will shoot you.
So I thought...I was also not too serious, hence the smily. Anyhow, I guess this is one of the threads where in the end we will have to agree that we disagree.
I would defer anything Marine to USMCPrice and formerjughead, but it is still hard for me to accept that with the saturation of everything Nazi (TV, Film, Video Games etc.) in our media that no one involved had a clue as to the meaning of SS runes.
Jugs is kinder and gentler now, he would mearly break your legs in five places, then call the meat wagon for ya!
\ ...Which is amusing, as at least half the members of Kiss were Jewish. Agreed, I'm not buying it either.
To jugs and pricey....It is a problem lads...Just put yourselves in front of the same camera and ask if you would be posing in your time too? We live and die at times by our reputations....Sometimes we just have to say they got it wrong and it needs sorting....But if its any consolation...there were plenty of Brits in uniform in my day that had tats of swastikas and the like....I thought they were prats myself but thats just me....I have to say it...those guys in the photo are just prats frist....marines second....Thats life.
Was using the symbol the 'brightest idea'? No it wasn't, but also, is the related so called outrage also blown out of proportion? Yep. The 'mindset' of a Soldier is as foreign to most people as Dark Matter, Quantum Mechanics and Politicians fulfilling promises is to the rest of us. Those soldiers who carry weapons do so for one reason, to kill. They are trained to kill. As has been pointed out, the front line Warriors are 'us' when we were 18-20 years old. To be a "Badass" you have to think you are. Anything that reinforces that attitude helps keep other things such as fear and uncertainty maybe not buried, but on a back burner. Personally I doubt the story that they were not aware of the symbolism of the "SS" lightning bolts. I doubt it was for the 'cool look factor'. Why else use it? The "SS" were known for their ruthlessness and for the Marine sniper I'd guess that would be Rule One. The Swastika was not originally a Nazi symbol but today that is the only way it is seen. We've become conditioned to be revolted at certain images and it's too bad we can't take back those images from the usurper. The problem as I see it is; In this PC driven, instant access informational World we live in, there is and always will be things none of us will agree with. One persons/group 'inside joke' is another's outrage. Anyone want to guess how big a Bruhaha would be unleashed if those same Soldiers were holding a flag with a Christian Cross or the image of Christ on it? I'm just another armchair military advocate, a civvie with loads of respect for our Armed Forces, but one who also realizes (believes), that just because someone wears the Uniform they can't and won't do dumb things.
I've actually fought this battle before. When I was in STA school (1987) the same symbol was used to designate Scout Sniper teams on map overlays and what not. They were refered to as "lightening bolts" and never as "SS". As a matter of course I would use the same symbol to anotate my team's position, the only thing I did different was add arrows the the legs, a simple act of rebellion/ antagonism/ protagonism.
They must have picked up that symbol from somewhere, it's just too close to the SS runes to be a coincidence, and it's unlikely the "source" didn't have at least some explanation of what the SS actually were, IMO bad damage control, some troops did something stupid, nobody got hurt, reprimand the idiots, end of story. I do agree that the stress of combat (though I have no personal experience) can do things they otherwise wouldn't even think think of, but one reason "military discipline" exists is just to avoid these things and it's what distinguishes an army from a horde, and hordes, while effective fighters, are not effective peacekeepers. IMHO in the case of the stupid flag combat stress has a lot less to do with it than just not stopping to think.
Have to be honest...done it myself...Had an argument...one sided...me being little erk...with sgt about taking down my Hitler poster on my wardrobe in my room which upset a wo on inspection...What the f.... you playing at was the reaction...I just thought it was a cool poster at the time....the WO was ex Polish RAF ww2 vetran...I learned quickly.
....try it the other way! I´m more liberal to this. Let the boys the toys as long as they won´t act like the SS or feeling like a "Herrenmensch. If so, there are enough possibilities to get them back on the ground! And spreading around such things helps only to give those Nazi symbols a eternal live.
Could be....I have got a birth mark tatoo...RW it looks like.....Royal Windsor thinks I.....Rong Won...says mum...and mum knows best...but Sometimes I get to thinking......
