if a single wildcat encountered a single zeke at same alt/ speed the only thing for the cat driver to hope for was a good head on fireing pass..and then a dive pell mell for the deck to gain enough distance/ seperation for another head on attack.....ive flown a hundred flight sim fights over many different sim makers over several years (zeke v wcat ) against other online human pilots ...i would choose the zeke every time if possible and if saddled with the cat would resort to the above tactic ...there isnt any other choice , in sim combat ,nor would there be in real life...btw ,if you meet ON the deck ,there is little hope for the wildcat pilot to survive ,ime..

No offence, but I wouldn't take a sim too seriously. I'm sure it's good, but no matter how many variables they include they still have to make it playable. A really realistic flight sim would be extremely boring.

the endless route flights , 4 or 8 hr patrols and non contact sorties would be realistic and rather boring ,however we typically start the sim very close to the description i used above , varyag , ..its not boreing in the least ,i can assure you..why you would think this encounter would be boreing to the real life prespireing young naval flyers ..is beyond my ken...... in il 2 f.b. we each have a stick ,rudder , airlerons a throttel / mixture control , cowl flaps , combat flaps , a certain fuel load , the actual ammo (60 rnds per 20mm gun on zeke ,so shoot carfully) and weight load with each plane (there are dozens of ww2 planes to choose from) exactly calibrated to handle by the numbers ..to the best of the designers data ie roll rate , eng overheat rate ,black outs ,red outs , climb rate ,dive speed , compressability ,airframe red line speed , aircraft vulnerability ie the mustangs suprizingly easy to shoot out engine , p47 almost indestructeble to .30, zeke ,forget it ..dont allow any bullets to stike it !...im a private pilot and i find this sim quite realistic

Let me explain what I mean by boring by comparing it to driving a car. I enjoy driving, but a car sim would pointless for me. Another thing it's that it is a completely different feeling actually being in the cockpit, which you as a private pilot should know, and that you are exposed to a lot of things in the real thing like noise and fumes which you wont experience in front of your computer.

I just don't think a personal experience from a flight sim is good enough for this kind of discussion.

vary, i also drive a car ,i would find a driveing sim which replecates my daily commute to be somwhat dull ...but raceing my freinds online at monaco or taledega is not boring at all ..i also own msfs 2004 in which i can fly a 172 or a cherokee which i find dull ..but to preveiw a cross country from say ,gnoss feild to south lake tahoe ,it is quite useful and a good saftey precaution ..for instance i can make it almost ifr conditions and see if i can still find my way from the saftey of my office ( if jj kennedy had practiced his cape cod trip in zero zero night conditions he would have survived his last flight, imo )... dogfighting in online combat is not dull ,in the least ..if you havent done an on line sim of recent vintage you are not really up to speed as to the validity as to the sims vrs real life debate...modern sims use tons of ram and memory of course and a fast processer and a good vid card too... and this keeps most forum guys kinda in the dark... as one can post in here with a windows 95 doorstop antique , quite well..
