By what exactly do you mean "WE"? One of the most disturbing images I saw was of a burned ME-262 pilot. His face was pitted and twisted, his lips were gone, and he required dark glasses to see because his eyes were so injured. I must have seen that when I was 8 or 9. I couldn't sleep that night. That is, until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Seeing as a picture is worth a thousand words, and it's getting late, I thought I'd cheat my keyboard. A German cemetary: It's French counterpart at Verdun. Their silence speaks volumes. [ 24 July 2002, 05:33 AM: Message edited by: Panzer Lehr ]
PL, Somber images indeed. Glad to see you dropped in, take a look at the Panther vs Tiger thread, interesting, (and familiar) stuff...
Hey, Otto. Nice place you run here. I'll go see what the nice men are saying about the pretty Panther.
Welcome, Panzerlehr!!!! I think your post number one is the best of all posts number one!!!! We hope to see you around the forum oftenly!!! By we, I mean the man kind. And yes, these are the most horrendous pictures ever. I had the idea of posting those very same pictures (from that wonderful site: "photos of the great war", isn't it?) which had amazed me and made my heart feel week... But I lost them and have not visited the site again...
Odd to see that very much the same pictures come to haunt us all. I guess there´s something very touching yet different because some of them aren´t so bloody or full of explosions. The look on the face or the position of the body can change the whole atmosphere. One of the pictures I found touching me to the bone was the previously mentioned photo during spring 1942, as the melting of snow brought the man visible from the mud, driven over by a thousand trucks etc.Very sad picture. One other picture is the one of Hitler congratulating a young boy for heroism or just for joining the army, guess the boy was some 10-12 years old. Hitler looks very old and wrinkled, and the boy looks very much full of courage like he would save the Reich! Yes, the concentration camps were awful but they have been discussed. The footage of atom bomb exploding in Hiroshima really changed the history and comes to my mind here. Also in one document there was a scene where they showed how a person had literally disapperead by the atom bomb forces and only a shadow was left in the pavement.A shadow! All that was left!
Hi Guys, I saw the bit about the Royal Signals guys who were murdered in Northern Ireland? I did 3 years in Northern Ireland and while I was out there we were given a talk by the RUC Inspector who had to investigate the murders. Bish all those that perpetrated that terrible crime went inside for a long time. That was right down to the taxi driver who helped to drive off the two soldiers. We watched the full TV coverage, and I mean the full one, they didn't just stab one guy with a screwdriver, they actually impaled the other on railings. It was a terrible sight to see, even as we just sat there in the classroom. The two soldiers were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is also true that one had days to do and was taking the other on sight seeing tour. All troops had been told to keep out of the area because of those funerals. If you remember a Loyalist terorist had shot a load of mourners and had thrown a grenade at another republican funeral and people were very edgy. But, this RUC officer, I can't remember his name now, devotes a lot of his time in reminding people about this terrible day in Northern Ireland. And on the subject of WWII pictures? Well there are many terrible ones, but the one that stands out for me is of a German pointing a pistol at a Jew by a deathpit. The Jewish guy is staring straight at the camera, he has the look of resignation that he is about to die. Yet, he also has that look of defiance. It is an extremely chilling image.
It's that one: A mother hiding and trying to save her child while being shot by a rifleman. http://www.pgonline.com/electriczen/images2/g61.jpg World War II, Eastern Front, Einsatzgruppen or Police. [ 23 August 2002, 01:39 PM: Message edited by: AndyW ]
I saw the most horrific image today. It is the CHRONICLE OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR. The picture shows a blindfolded Chinese POW lying on teh ground in a semi-foetal position and a Japanese soldier is about to bayonet the man. The submissive nature of the POW, combined with the utter determination and BANZAI approach etched in the approach of the Japanese soldier chills me to the bone. How can an entire nation become so ruthlesss?????
Because nations are made of men and men are ruthless. That's man. There you have that image you have just saw and there you have the Sictin Chapel; there you have all the horrendous images we have mentioned and there you have Händel or Beethoven's music. The man is very good or very bad... Always.
