I have always wanted to go there, and hopefully I will be able to some day. My Uncle was with the 28th infantry, (hence my name, Keystone Two-Eight) and by some freaky miracle, actually beat the odds the 28th had against them, and made it home. When i first heard of the battle via "When Trumpets Fade", I became really engrossed in what happened there, and I have to say, that to this day it remains one of my favorite subjects in military history.
the bottle is a curious item, i wonder if it was from a medic bag? also Ed what is the circular thing to the far left in the bottom picture, it has ridges on it?
I'm told that the bottle is US and it contained waterclearing pills, the round object in the left corner was found in de side of a foxhole and could have been a mirror of a small make-up box, used for shaving? When i dug it up, some small pieces of broken (mirror)glas fell out!
Great pics, Edwin! Do keep posting pics of future trips and finds - really interesting stuff! -whatever -Lou
your not wrong about nice pics for the momen't one can only dream of doing somethink like your doing cheers mark
Last thursday a friend and i paid another visit to the Forest and these are the finds from my part: This mortar is back in the hole it came out from, just for the picture, i'm no ammo fan! An US Lemon Juice package, this is one i did not had yet! A picture of the area: An Garand oiler, it was already late on the day and becoming dark, in my haste digging it up, i crushed it. It WAS in perfect condition!
I believe Halldin is asking about the location of your finds in the forest. If this is the case the answer is near the Ruhr Gebiet.
In that case, the sector south-east of Aken/Aachen with the towns Vossenack / Hurtgen / Merode / Schevenhütte etc.
Last sunday i visited the Hurtgen Forest once again with a search-buddy. We spend the afternoon digging and walking and came up with the following finds: This was our starting-point: My buddy found this dumppit: Remnants of a bajonet/knife (i do not know what kind!): Remnants U.S. gasmask: Part of a K-98: Part of a U.S. goggle M-1944: This is how its supposed to look like: Round aluminium with inscription U.S.: And all the finds of the day (my part):
Once again some excellent finds there! The gasmask is in fairly good condition, same thing for the glove and the lid.
yes a great fing and the end of the gas mask looks nilly new thanks for leting us see your goodies best krieg
Great finds Ed! I'm curious as to what the 3 things are on the top of the last pic, and the round alum. disc? Nice stuff! Thanks!
