The second day of the action included the first recorded sinking of a capital ship at harbour by a torpedo bomber.
Mers el Kebir, Algeria. I believe the capital ship you referred to was the French battleship Dunkerque. Ironic tie in to earlier guesses.
Well done. I was tempted to go with "Was this the second Dunkirik/France's Dunkirk" as a clue! lol Take it away T.W.!
1. scene of heavy urban fighting 2. ca. 200,000 persons killed as a result 3. city previously considered "safe"
Texson has already got it. If you google earth his answer you'll see!! Edit: I cant wait for TW to come back and let you set a new puzzle. I'm jonesing for a new one already! lol
Yes, it is Festung Breslau (Fortress Wroclaw) which was under siege by the Red Army from February 8 until May 6, 1945. Many of the civilian refugees who did escape were killed in Allied bombing raids on Dresden. Breslau was considered as "safe" because for much of the war it was out of range of allied bombers. For this reason, the city was an industrial center with many war-related factories and work camps located there. Before the siege, the city had suffered almost no bombing damage. As a result of the fighting in the last days of the war, the city was almost completely destroyed. After the war the German city of Breslau became the Polish city of Wroclaw as decided at the Potsdam Conference.
