I think that ww2 pilots called UFO's "foo-fighters"- the band Foo-fighters got its name from that.

when did we or anyone ever make a working flying saucer?..iirc there was a ducted fan thing that hovered in ground effect ,early 60s?...it seems to me that except for gas bags all working aircraft have wings and a tail...

A couple of feet I think. Enough to make it tippy. But yeah basivbasically a hovercraft without the skirt just a ducted fan (probably more than one)

It was basically uncontrollable. Worth trashing. But an interesting experiment.

so back to the basic fact...to have a practical flying machine one needs wings and a tail...there are no flying saucers ....being piloted by humans

everybody had a proto type flying wing ...none ever were produced because lacking a tail they were all horribly unstable and usually ended up smeared all over some hill or farm field...

Actually technically you only need a stable airfoil....controls aren't always nesecary for flight.

dang ,black, a flyin wing WITH controls is a biotch to control...one built without controls would be kinda hard to sell to the taxpayers and i bet the test pilots would hate it....

v1s , of course had some type of self leveling device or everyone of them would roll into a steep dive and fireball within sight of the launch ramp...a perfectly balanced model plane can fly staight and level if you can fly it indoors ..ie a huge indoor stadium
