Has anyone seen or read the new book about Hackett? I know the author got access to all of Hackett's surviving papers, but given his skill post-war in avoiding answering questions about his handling of the 4th Para Brigade, I suspect if he did write anything down about this it has long been destroyed. However I will be pleasantly surprised if this book throws any new light on the Battle in the Woods. The handling of hte 4th Brigade was certainly the cause of some lively debate amongst those who were with me in June 2003 around the traces of the slit trenches at one of the HQ locations.

    Hi Niall,

Saw the new book about Hackett in London's Motor Books last week - as an inveterate secondhand bookbuyer I couldn't bring myself to shell out the full list price !

Haven't read any reviews as yet - like you, I'm wondering if it 'goes deep' or is another run-of-the-mill biography....

The book is 'Shan' Hackett - The Biography Of General Sir John Hackett by Roy Fullick ( Pen & Sword Books ).

Thanks Martin, I'll look out for this one, although it will take a while before this one will be available second hand over here.

I still do intend to raid the Hartenstein Museum Bookstore though, second hand or not...
