Hmm..having to think hard about this one.
If it was 3 or more x's it could be what your wife/ girlfriend put in her letter (meaning kisses)and not wanting the officer who censors the mail to read. (yes they were pretty innocent and naive compared to today)

Seriously though I cannot think of what xx might mean.

Well, under different circumstances, Tom's guess would have been good, the more so since I'm a tactical mapmaker of sorts! However, these aren't those circumstances.

The answer has nothing to do with combat, or combat arms. Strictly a 'behind the scenes' sort of thing.

    no, no....

    Hmmm......

Analyze the XX from a symbology standpoint, perhaps. Or, consider them as Roman numerals.

You Brits are gonna be miffed when I finally tell you.

"Double-Cross", so something to do with "turning" enemy agents in the UK?

I know MI6 (or 5 -- always confuse them) had almost complete success breaking German spy-rings

And the Scot has it! XX, which was used to name the "Twenty Committe," in charge of turning German agents into double agents.

I yield the floor to you, Sir!

Good work. Sorry, I had not seen that you had already posted the answer I gave, a few posts back.

Grieg: it's still pretty common for girls to end letters (emails) with XXX as far as I know; the difference is that today it doesn't mean anything, it's like saying "Bye".
