Well, your impression is, in fact, wrong. Serbia and Montenegro formed what was called the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. This state included, among others, the province of Kosovo, which though once autonomous within Yugoslavia, belonged legally (under international law) to Serbia. Clinton's bombing campaign in Kosovo took place in 1999. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia continued to function as a fully sovereign state until 2003, after which it was reconstituted as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. In May, 2006, Montenegro voted to declare independence and the State Union, widely regarded as the last vestige of Yugoslavia, was dissolved.

As for Kosovo, it has never actually declared independence, although in 2001, the provisional government formed by ethnic Albanians proposed a constitution to provide a framework for self-government. The UN has never recognized Kosovo as an ndependent state, and technically it remains a province of Serbia, mainly due to Serbian and Russian insistence that it remains part of Serbia.

In fact, there have always been people living in poverty in America. There are, and have always been, people living in poverty in Australia. There are still plenty of opportunities in both America and Australia to become affluent, so it could be said that both are "lands of opportunity". However, I've spent considerable time in Australia and am married to an ex-Australian citizen, and I can assure you that Australia is not now, nor never will be, the "new America".

Sassy Lady, I'm no aviator I'm afraid. Light tanks for me. When Kosovo went on I was at school ;) That said, quite a few guys I work with were there, interesting times.

Thanks for the compliment though ;)

Always happy to be corrected, I must admit I wasn't entirely sure.

Hey Devilsadvocate, Of cause there's poor people in Australia and i'm one of them. But i'm better of being poor in Australia than being poor in America.
I heard that poor Americans [factory workers]had to have two jobs to survive to make ends meat, i'm just saying that Australia so far has got better living condictions than America. I'm sure if Australia was old like America is, well be where America is right now.

American Movie stars and base ball players and basketball players get millions or billions but yet the poor old factory worker has to work two jobs just to survive, and if you watch cable tv, you can see the poverty in the poor streets.sorry but thats how i see America. If you're American , i was not having ago at you:)

Lady, that's awfully socialist of you ;) Next you'll be suggesting that we have some sort of duty to society...

Anyhow, back on topic, what is Obama up to now? I've been out of the loop a bit.

I found this, after a quick look.
    Inflation-adjusted wages,
    UAW assembler

    http://www.uaw.org/barg/03/barg02.cfm

In 2004, $24.58/hr, that's about $52,000/yr. That's decent money. You won't get wealthy, but you can live off of it.
    Later on the page
A typical UAW-represented skilled-trades worker earns $29.75 per hour of straight time, that's about $60K/yr.

I would suspect that you can hear most anything bad about life here in the US, if you listen to the right groups of people, specifically those yearning for a socialist state.

You choose to do what you choose to do. I made the choice not subsist on poor-paying jobs, which is why I attended college & nursing school (while working 40hrs/wk, mind you) and then I made the effort to obtain additional education later in life so I could change to a better paying job. It was tough for a few years, I essentially changed careers in mid-life, and therefore started out at the bottom of the wage totem pole. But it was worth it and I have been blessed.

We make choices, either unintentionally or by intent, as to how our life will progress. Preparation is the foundation of success. Drop out of high school and/or have a child without benefit of a marriage and you almost guarantee a life of poverty.

Awe, heavens no, you've not offended me in the least. Please don't think that. To offend me, you have to start talking about my wife, children or mom and maybe my father and that depends on what you have said.:D

I actually don't know many poor people here, the ones that I am acquainted with don't work much at all. People who have two jobs are usually working toward some goal, like a better education, or accumulating enough money to buy a house, or make investments. Some people who work at two jobs are poor, but very few of them stay that way for long. For people who remain poor, it is usually either by choice, or because they failed to take advantage of the free education that is available everywhere in this country. As for factory workers, there are a few in my neighborhood and they generally make $80,000 to $150,000 annually, not a bad wage by any standard. Of course, most of the factories around here (Silicon Forest) make computer chips, and high-tech electronics. There is a stevedore who lives down the road from me; he tells me the average dock worker makes about $65,000/year. He's been one for about 18 years now and makes considerably more, probably about $85,000 to $95,000.

Yes, it's pretty hard being really poor here, and yes, you are better off being poor in Australia than in the US. But again, here, being really poor means that you made a choice somewhere in your life that led to your situation; dropping out of school, having a child too early, or passing up a chance to better yourself. But, if as you say, Australia is a land of opportunity, and you are fairly young, you should have plenty of opportunities to develop marketable skills, and become more affluent. I certainly hope you are able to do that soon.

My wife actually held two jobs for awhile in Australia, but she was working to put herself through nursing school, and needed the money for books and tuition. After graduating, she worked as a public nurse for a time and says she constantly had trouble making "ends meet". After we got married and moved to Oregon, she became a mid-wife, certified massage therapist, and maintained her certificate as surgical nurse. Finally she became a Nurse Practitioner. Now she is the Director of The County Health Service and makes an outrageous salary. Not bad for a Chinese girl born in a small village on the island of Borneo, but it didn' come easy, either here or in Australia.

I do wish you well, in whatever you do.

Like i said before, i stand corrected and i was wrong about Factory workers. No intentions to offend Americans on here, and i'll stand down.

Believe me, Sassie, no offense was taken, and no apology is necessary. You can find just about any situation you can imagine in America, if you look hard enough. I'm sure the American woman you mention was telling the truth; it's just not he whole truth, nor even a general truth. If you ever get the chance, I hope you will travel in America and learn what it is like for yourself.
