Think I have to let you have that - "gallantry in the face of the enemy" (with linden leaves clasp for repeat issue) your turn
you've brought up an interesting controversy Some sources such as Wiki claim it was a Caterpillar D8. Most NZ sources claim it was a Caterpillar RD8, which is just an older term used for a D8 some sources say it was a Caterpillar DH8 or D8H, but this can't be true because they were only built from 1958 onwards. Peter Chamberlain & Chris Ellis, and also Janes, both claim it was an International Harvester and some sources claim the model to be a TD-6 or TD-18. Personally I think the IH TD-6 is the most likely - the Caterpillars and the TD-18 both have a standard engine position that sticks forward way more than the BST shows. The suspension is also the closest match IMHO, although with the additions it is hard to be sure. It may be that each of the 3 (or 5) built used different tractors. sorry
out of interest Mike, what answer did you have? For the next question how about a 'what is this happy redneck carrying'?
Nigel, I had the the International Harvester, with a note that some sources claimed the D8 from where I pulled the pic. The rest I hadn't seen.
Thanks. I think I might look into it further later - should be a solvable mystery, even if a little irrelevant - just came across some things that make me think it might not have been quite as useless as is ordinarily made out. maybe the next armoured vehicle thread
Ok a small clue - it is a semi-automatic, not fully-auto weapon, although a few were converted to fully auto later in the war
still 20mm, and not Swiss (p.s. Nige is my shortened version, but doesn't really save much typing - 'N' could work)
I'm surprised you guys have not managed to crack this one yet. If i am not wrong, it is the Lathi L-39, Finnish 20mm Anti-Tank. Aka "Norsutykki"( "The Elephant Gun" ).
