In peace sons bury their fathers, but in war fathers bury their sons.
    Croesus

When will our consciences grow so tender that we will prevent human misery rather than avenge it.
    Elanor Roosevelt

Religion and science both profess peace (and the sincerity of the professors is not being doubted), but each always turns out to have a dominant part in any war that is going to be contemplated.
    Howard Nimerov

During times of war, hatred becomes quite respectable, even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism.
    Howard Thurman

The wave of the future is not the conquest of the world by a single dogmatic creed but the liberation of the diverse energies of free nations and free men.
    JFK

War is a malignant disease, an idiocy, a prison, and the pain of it is beyond telling or meaning; but war is our condition and our history, the place we had to live in.
    Martha Gelhorn

There are no warlike people, only warlike leaders.
    Ralph Bunche

History teaches us that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap.
    Ronald Reagan

A self-respecting nation is ready for anything, including war, except for a renunciation of its option to make war.

"Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do & die"

Don't know if this one has come up before, but this quote from Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" often came to mind in overseas service wartime when we feared we were part of a general "cock-up".

    The full paragraph went:

    "Forward the Light Brigade!"
    Was there a man dismay'd?
    Not tho' the soldier knew
    Some one had blunder'd:
    Theirs not to make reply,
    Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.
