I have read dozens of books about World War II but I find most lacking in terms of the War in the Pacific. I am wondering if anyone can recommend a books or books that include information about this theatre. I am not particularly interested in conventional battles. Would particularly appreciate suggestions about espionage, commando actions, life in the combat zone for civilians. Basically anything which covers the more human side of the conflict. Thanks
If youre interested in a Japanese perspective, though its a little dry...I loved these two: Japan at War: Saburo Ienaga, The Pacific War and Tales By Japanese Soldiers by Kazuo Tamayama (though this is really focused on Burma campaign) Both are excellent.
Thanks Herr Gooblemienhoffen. Books from the Japanese perspective would indeed provide some interesting insight. I should clarify my question just so anyone else who decides to answer is clear. Books related to Te Burma campaign or for that matter any of the campaigns which took place in the Far East are more then helpful. As I mentioned I have had a somewhat difficult time finding as thorough a book about the Far Eastern Campaign then Europe or for that matter any other area of conflict so any recommendations are very much appreciated.
FYI: another Burma/China/India campaign one: The Bruma Road. Harper Collins' by Donovan Webster. this is more a Allied perspective but interesting. Another sorta related interesting one: Ghost Soldiers. Anchor Books, by Hampton Sides..tells the story of the Rangers rescue of POW's from Bataan Death March. Tales by Japanese Soldiers also tells about Japanese "death march" during their long retreat..along with some haunting illustrations by one of the survivors. If you read just one...read this one.

My local library being in a town of seven hundred is quite limited in terms of non-fiction. I have remedied that at least in terms of military history to an extent but have a great deal of work to do. As far as Barnes and Noble as well as Amazon I buy a great many books on each of them. A particular favorite of mine is Better World Books. My question stems more from finding quality in quantity then in an inability to find anything. Appreciate your comments though.
