Gents, have been in correspondance the last 10 minutes with a gent who lost a relative during a B-24 mission on 1 August 1943 in the area of Greece.

Question is this, 5 claims were made by pilots of IV./JG 27 in the area of Kefallinia. Where is Kefallinia located ? this maybe the German spelling of ?

    thanks all

I would try to help you but--I feel as if my brain is being over-loaded and will explode due to antagonizers in the FFZ.

Calm down, take a deep breath and then go down to your local German deli and have a nice glass of white wine. I've got a glass sitting before me to mellow me out.....and then go find me that town/village on a Greek map or the net ! ;)

It is a fairly large island off the SW coast of Greece 38.15 N 20.35 E.
Today, a popular tourist spot with an international airport.

    Erich:

It is indeed Cephalonia, Kefallenía in Greek, the largest island in the West of Greece in the Jonic Sea, whose most important city is Argostólion. Captain Corelli's Mandolin history is placed here. Also, very interesting WWII battles took place here.

Excellent ! and a big thank you guys. Yes as I read the map now, one of the claimants was shot down by return fire of one of the B-24's over the Ionian Sea and he baled out......hope the water was warm ? !

    You're welcome, Erich!

And yes, I think it is quite warm. The Mediterranean is not precisely the warmest of seas but the Greek summer is quite hot and nice. The landscapes of the Greek isles are some of the most wonderful things on Earth. I went to a cruiser there some five years ago and it was loveable!

    Kalímera, Erich! ;)

Oh how I remember flying into Athens in June of 1980 with my oh so pregnant wife, our second child. It was absolutely terrible, hot and humid, and we wish we could of spent a day out walking amidst the sea breezes. Hopefully one day to go back. this was a trip we visited a relative living and working in Israel and we did a stop over in Tel-Aviv, ah the Mediterraen was lovely ! the air was nice while in the water but once out.......uk !
