    Sturm Tiger has it!

It was a famous quote from "The Hobbit".

    Hahn: how could you!!

Stix: Also correct. Even more so really, but Sturm has it for speed off the mark.

    Poor people have IT.

    Wealthy people don't want IT.

IT is stronger than the devil.

    IT can kill God.

    What exactly is IT?

What are the minimum number of modifications needed to make the equation: 1 + 1 + 1 = 142 true?

    1 + 1+ 1= 1 + 4 - 2?

I almost hope it's wrong! Cuz if it's right, I gotta find a riddle!!!

It's not the answer I was looking for, but I can't argue with it.

The answer I had was to put a slanted line on one of the + signs to make it a 4...ie 141 + 1 = 142

Tom (Ossian) I have to go with your answer, your turn.

(Damn, I thought I had a good one  )

    I think I have just reversed yours -- changed a 4 into a + rather than a + into a 4....

OK (more a puzzle than a riddle)
You have 9 bags of coins. 8 have the same number of coins, but one is "short" so has less coins in it. You have a balance but no weights so you can only use it to compare the weight of bags.
What is the minimum number of weighings that will always identify the "short" bag? (explain)

NB each time you compare bags it counts as one weighing

I would put one bag to one side.

Put 4 bags on each side of the scales....1

Discard the side which is heavier, if both sides are the same then the first bag is the 'short' one.

Of the 4 bags that were on the lighter side, put 2 on each side.....2

Again discard the heavier side, you are then left with 2 bags, place 1 on each side......3

There, you have identified the 'short' bag in 3 moves :D

HAH! I can do it in 2 moves.
put 3 bags on both sides.
If they are equal continue with the 3 bags you did not weigh, otherwise take they lighter group.
From the 3 remaining bags put 1 on either side.
Now it's either the light side or if they are equal, the bag you didn't put on the scale.

You are standing in front of a shed.
On the outside are 3 switches.
On the inside is 1 light.
1 of the switches operates the lamp.
You can do whatever you like, but when you open the door you have to be able to tell which switch operates the light.

(No cheesy clue like drill a hole in the door or open the door and try the switches.
It can be solved through hard, long and practical thinking.)
