That was really interesting to read about. You would have to be really brave to be a woman pilot on the eastern front. Can you think what the Germans would have done to the ones captured.

dont know if its true but Nikita Khrushchev used to criticize stalin's tactics and said that he often used a world globe to plan his attacks on... can anyone verify this to be true or was Khrushchev just trying to make stalin look bad, which he loved to do?

    And...

On 6th June 1943, Soviet pilot of 88IAP Alexander K. Gorovetz attacked a big group of the Stukas. His alone La-5 shot down 9 (nine!) Ju87s in single combat and forced all other bombers to chaotically drop bombs and to retreat. Ufortunately, he was out of ammo. And when four FW190s arrived, the hero was killed. So 9:1 during one mission is the world best score for a single fighter. These results were confirmed by ground troops which watched this bloody battle in the sky.

This whole question gives the Eastern Front air war a particularly sinister flavour.

There are certainly instances of downed Luftwaffe pilots committing suicide in their cockpits rather than face capture ( and worse ) by Soviet troops.

That is a great picture of a T-34. Read a great story about a German Panzer column moving through Russian lines using a captured T-34 at the head of the column. It was painted with German markings but all the checkpoints saw in the dark was the silloette. They even had their troops ride on the tanks Soviet style, and smoking cigarettes, to increase the ruse

    Hello gentlemen,

I've been away for a while so I wasn't able to respond to the Normandie-niemen postings.

There will be ( coming december 2005 )an english language book on the Normandie-niemen Regiment called:
French Eagles, Soviet Heroes: The Normandie-niemen Squadrons on the Eastern Front, by John D. Clarke, Sutton Publishing.

I'm looking forward to it because it's an interesting subject, but Í'm not able to read books in french very well. This will be the first english language book on the subject. Previews were promising.

That´s the "The Molotov's bread basket"

The bomb was basically a large cylinder with some 200 small 2,5 kg incendiary bomblets inside. The tailwings made the cylinder to spin and the centrifugal force threw the bomblets out in a wide area.

This weapon was not very effective, since the small fires created by the bomblets were easy to put out by the civilians, and because of the snow covering the terrain. But still, Molotov's denials of Soviet bombings of the civilian population earned it the nickname "Molotov's bread basket".
