The reason I posted this thread originally was not about those who were arrested. They should have been. My issue was with the completely casual manner in which the head of security allowed a secret document to be out in the open. Granted, it only made a few days difference in when the action was supposed to occur, but by allowing the photo to be see, it forced the police to put the plan into action early, possibly allowing some higher ups to be missed. I have no quarrel with those who would like to see the issuing governments, e.g. Pakistan, be more stringent about issuing visas. I am even more concerned with "home-grown" wackos who join these movements, even though they grew up in Western societies. I sometimes wish that democratic foreign policies allowed for carpet bombing of suspected terrorist areas in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It would certainly get the attention of those who wish to cause trouble. I know this is at odds with my generally liberal views, but d**n I get tired of the wishy-washy attitude of the governments in those two countries.
No, lrusso its a commonly misunderstood and in my view a fallacy that liberals or in my case socialists, wont fight the hell with anybody for peace. We will and do.
Thanks for the comment, Urqh. I agree that there come times when you must do things you don't like to maintain peace. I don't feel it is inconsistent with my overall views, but others call it waffling. I'm sorry when innocents get hurt in US bombings in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but when the enemy hides among civilians, what can you do? The terrorists don't seem to care much when innocents get hurt in their bombings.
Slightly off topic but I would not be here today if for one fact. I was on a school trip to London and a small group of us went over to the Regent's Park bandstand the day before the IRA bomb went off! After the bombing at school we got together and could not believe how close we came. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/july/20/newsid_2515000/2515343.stm
You are one lucky son of a beeb, these bombers don't care who they kill. it is so dangerous these days. i know how britain can stop the bombings in britain, leave iran and iqra. watch the bombing stop to a halt.
I do not believe in the governments foreign policy but have no doubt some other groups would think of a reason why it should set off bombs in our streets in the future. GB, UK, England whatever you call it is looked upon as the root cause of many evils by many people. We manage to settle one problem then another pops out of the queue. It comes from sticking our noses in other peoples affairs over many years, past and present. Yes the thought of a bomb is frightening, the terrorists rely on that. But do they work? Apparently not.Life goes whether in London,New York, Moscow, Bahgdad or Tel Aviv.
I was at the forces remedial centre in Chessington that day Richard, on crutches...the injured eventually made their way to join us there over following months. Nice sunny day, with all the wounded and injured of Falklands and Ireland etc all huddled up on top of hill as they searched for the third bomb in the forces remedial hospital.
I don't think it is cause of britian fighting there home land,i do believe why the muslims are attacking britain is cause muslims hate americans and america but sence britain is helping america and americans, the muslims have decided to attack britain aswell. australia has had the same threats of muslims attacking australai since australia have decided to help america. look what britain and australia is doing for america risking there country and public, who's says britain and australia never helps america (another american on another site).
those people need to learn that america is not a country to **** with and that if america goes down we go down fighting and that is the way it will be the only reason they use suicide bombers is because they are to cowardly to come out and fight the u.s. head on cause they know that if they did that that would be the end of them and the only reason half the conflicts end up some how having the united states involved is because everytime someone gets in trouble they immediatly think that we will help save there ***** from every thing under the moon and there fore I have made my point.
Heidi, we may very well be aiding America as an ally, but Afghanistan is as much our fight as anyone elses. We have a close association with Pakistan due to our shared history and peoples. As it should be. There are many dual nationalities in the UK who hold same citizenship for Pakistan and have every right of abode here. They add to the quality of life in the UK. Some would say otherwise but thats the same in every country the world over. The problem I see is only in the allocaton of visas at this present time to temporary residents. If it was Australia involved in similar I would be for banning on a temporary basis all Australian temporary visa visits unless assured and until the visa system we have is proved to be working for the good of this country in the first respect and providing the needs for the visiting student that should be expected. I see a mess and one that needs to be temporarlily halted until we are sure we have the right means and right staff doing the issuing in Pakistan on our behalf...If the problem grows to Chile then I would expect no different.
OK ... This thread went quiet for a bit because, well ... nothing has been happening. Well, we (the local community) have just had a circular delivered by Merseyside Police, who have finally finished ripping the apartment in the next street to bits and packed up and gone. The following is a draft of said circular: Dated ... 22nd April "Dear community member, You will be aware that on Wednesday 8 April the North West Counter Terrorist Unit executed a number of warrants in the Liverpool south area, as well as addresses and locations in Manchester and Lancashire. Protecting the public is the main focus of the police. These arrests were carried out after a number of UK agencies gathered information, which suggested potential risk to public safety. Twelve individuals were originally detained, one of whom was subsequently transferred into the custody of the UK Borders Agency (UKBA). All those remaining in police custody have now been released. Those individuals who are not UK citizens have been transferred into the custody of the UK Borders Agency. This investigation is ongoing. We are sure you understand that this could be a lengthy process. Chief Superintendent Steve Ashley said: "We understand that this operation has caused some disruption and concern to people living in nearby communities. This is an ongoing investigation and we very much appreciate your continuing support and patience. As part of this you will continue to see extra police patrols in your community now and in the coming days." Merseyside Police will not tolerate crimes against individuals or communities on account of their race, religion or gender. Any attempt to use these incidents to fuel unrest will be dealt with robustly." ... Beat terrorism ... extra vigilant ... suspicious activity ... call hot-line ... ... Love and handcuffs, Your local Bobby. Well, Urqh old buddy ... Looks right you were right to reserve judgment. All twelve released ... Only one was on a visa, eleven of them UK citizens (duel citizenship is a possibility)... So ... Urqh, as an ex Rozzer. With any charge under the Anti Terror Act, weather conspiracy or evidential, What are your chances of bail? Zero to none I would have thought. They (police) spent eleven days tearing that one-bed apartment to bits, and the official line is "Ongoing investigation" and not "Evidence gathering". Hmmm ... A bit "sus" if you ask me. :alarm:
"Just some peace loving muslim lads mucking about. Nothing to see here, goven'r! Move along now!" "All play and no work make Charlie Chan very dull policeman." (Charlie Chan at the Olympics)
Not an ex rozzer mate, ex RAF and RMP, the brother is a rozzer, probably drives past your house daily...so remember to wave to him.. Its all as the thread states at the beginning Snafu, and Drew and Stefan had a right to speak up the way they did about it. I thought this was likely the end result. Release with no charge. But on a different plain from Drew and Steffan. My problem was never with the arrests. The powers that be will state that they had to rush into this due to the problems with the photos of London terrorism officer involved outside Downing st. Thats as maybe but it does not escape the original intent and information. Was there enough to justify this sort of arrest be it early in daytime or at night when no cameras about? Its supposed to be intelligence lead??? Sounds more like street cameras picking them up in various locations and them taking pictures. Seems this is enough to scare us these days. I would say that is enough to scare us these days if the original story of all being on student visas was correct. But you say they are now saying only one was a student visa holder? Rest were dual nationality etc? If so then it was a govt spokesman thru police that released this....I'd like to see that person on tv apolgising to us not them. And also see them lose their jobs. This is too serious a time and matter to let idiots loose with their media handbooks. This does not change my belief and understanding of the problem I have, and that still remains that the student visa applicaton system as administered presently in Pakistan is a nightmare for security issues. Its farmed out in parts to the cheepest bidder. With some rubber stamping done by our own folk. That is not good enough from an area that no one can say is anything but stable or has folk wishing to do us harm. They must not be allowed an easy route into the country. At the moment our biggest terrorist threat emanates from this area. This means more not less scrutiny on entry requirements...Unfortunate but not racist. We did similar for Ireland and still do in some areas. Try getting through Luton Airport to Ireland or back without a seperate security system and their own sub terminal, same at Anglesey and other ferry ports during the emergencies. This is nothing new. So if our biggest terrorist problem used to be Ireland and we didnt mind controlling entry and exit to the extent of denying travel, then why is it so problematic now just because of sensitivities to Pakistan? We need to re-evaluate this, this incident has done us a favour. If it brings attention to the present stated of visa allocation, the hows and whos As for the present folk arrested, if not charged and hold dual citizenship then I dont understand the earlier reoports of them going to be deported? I would think they would not stand a chance in court on that one.
Well this went in a different direction than I anticipated. I was thinking that the original snafu was allowing a secret document to be visible and forcing an early motion into arresting some terrorists. If what Blacksnake posted is correct, the snafu is even bigger. How does the government investigate a group of people, think they have enough to arrest and detain them (albeit a few days early), then discover that there is not enough evidence to prosecute? It doesn't matter whether they were on visas or hold dual citizenship, someone screwed up royally. Just what did the government think they were going to find? I agree with Urqh that something needs to be done with the visa issue. I'm not fully informed on the situation in the US, but I have to believe it isn't much better. The problem is compounded when you consider the lack of vetting in places like Pakistan. It's worse than the blind leading the blind. Incompetence will be the end of us.
According to various press releases only one is a UK citizen the other 9 Pakistani on student visa have been released and transfered to the Borders agency for processing the remaining 2 are pending juricdiction- ie they are released but are not as yet transfered to the Borders Agency,(strange) possibly they are trying to ascertain their status visa wise. ~Steve
It is the latest high profile 'terrorism' arrest that ended in tears Terrorism arrests as men head for Gaza convoy - Telegraph No doubt the press will be full of stories about every 'bad' thing these men ever did in an attempt to blacken their names and justify the arrests. Take the Forest Gate shooting. BBC NEWS | UK | In quotes: Terror raid brothers The Scum, sorry I meant the Sun was forced to take back all the disinformation it had dutifuly repeated. IN articles last summer following the arrest in Forest Gate of the Kalam brothers, we incorrectly reported that Abul Koyair had criminal convictions, that the brothers did not tell police where substantial cash found at their home had come from and that charges were brought over paedophile images found on Abdulkahar’s computer. We also reported that there was an inquiry into allegations that the brothers had insulted and spat at soldiers outside their barracks. In fact, no charges were brought over the computer, which was second hand, police were immediately informed of the cash savings and no evidence was found by the inquiry that the brothers had insulted or spat at soldiers. We accept that the brothers are not involved in terrorism and apologise for the embarrassment caused. Corrections over Kalam family | The Sun |News Expect more of the same.....
