I recently heard a rumor that every veteran's day, charles schultz would print a cartoon of snoopy drinking beer with bill mauldin's willie and joe (schultz was in the armored infantry in WWII). Has anyone ever seen one of these?!?!
Snoopy did drink a Veterans' Day toast. My recollection is that it was, however, drunk with or to Mauldin himself. Ive seen one strip that has Snoopy saying that he is going over to Bill Mauldins house--I forget some of what was said.
There was never one of Snoopy actually drinking with Willie & Joe. He always said he was going over to Bill Mauldin's house to quaff a few root beers. There was one exception, but not raising a pint. The ultimate in "Willie and Joe": Amazon.com: Willie & Joe: The WWII Years Two Volume Slipcased Set: BILL MAULDIN: Books I always remembered reading the Peanuts strips, and wondering why Snoopy's Famous WW1 Flying Ace would "head over to Bill Mauldin's to quaff a few root beers". It wasn't until I was a teenager that I discovered the Willie and Joe cartoons, and was able to put two and two together (got five! Counted twice, same answer both times. Checked it on Wikipedia, so it must be right.). Question (sorta related): does anyone know of a website or book that has all of the "WW1 Flying Ace" strips in one spot? There was one that I had cut out of the paper years ago (laminated it and used it for a bookmark, which one of our beagles ate, dangit...), where the Ace was sitting on top of his doghou...er...Sopwith, in the pouring rain. Linus comes into the strip and starts proclaiming that this is no weather to be flying in, the inhumanity of it all, etc etc. Second panel, Ace looks down at him and mutters/thinks "poor guy, someone should do something about his morale." Third panel: "Tell him he'll be home by Christmas."
Oh geeze...Think I've got the pocketbook with that 'toon. Pretty sure it's a rare color page edition. We used to order books from our class every 3 months. Was a huge Peanuts fan.
