The Salutes for bringing my all time favourite WW2 character to People's attention...Clive "Killer" Caldwell. (Australias deadliest pilot).
Yeah I sort of started thinking myself into circles there, but Caldwell certainly knew what he was on about
CPL Punishment on 30 April 2011 correctly refers to Miss Beatrice "Tilly" Shilling, an engineer at Farnsborough who invented a device to improve performance of the Spitfire. It was nickamed "Miss Shilling's Orifice" or "Tilly's Diaphragm". Apparently she toured airfields fitting them personally, in this way no doubt adding lustre to her reputation. CPL's comment that had she been male she would have been forgotten may be politically incorrect but is probably true. However, the fact remains that for whatever reason Spitfire pilots like my dad remember the story of Ms Shilling and her orifice fondly.
when interviewed after the war, saburo sakai disclosed what he liked best about the zero. it wasn't the close turn, or the range, or anything else related to flying. he liked the twin machine guns mounted atop the cowling. the tracers aligned perfectly with his line of sight, he said. during a close dogfight with him coming to less than 75 meters of his opponent, he dispensed with the cannon on the wings and used only the machine guns. he aimed at the cockpit.
