That is probably just poetic licence. The KMT were a pretty well equipped army, all things considered.

KMT did have an armoured unit 200th army which is the elite force of KMT. And they engaged the japs in a famouse battle in Yunan.

The chinese built improvised armour on standard trucks in total numbering about 1000. Armament from machinegun to 57mm guns.

The tanks and armoured vehicles were owned by warlords and put in action according to their ideas. Warlords fought for money and when the japanese payed more they fought against the nationalists and communists. See war in Manchukwo.
