Think about your automobile. How did the firewall get it's name?

 

The material in the wall between the engine compartment and the passengers?

 

We are talking about the bulkhead between the engine compartment and passenger compartment.

How did it get the name "firewall"?

 

Because it stops an engine fire reaching the passengers?

 

Close. It does have to with fire but not, for the most part, from the engine.

Anybody else have answer?

IIRC the Firewall is a bulkhead intended to protect the passengers or drivers in case of the fuel tank catching fire. Probably am wrong though...

Early automobiles or steam engines? The word "firewall" comes from the area seperating where the fuel (wood or coal) was burned to provide the heat to make the steam, does it not?
