In McMinnville Oregon at the Evergreen Aviation museum, not too far from Portland, is a nice example of a P-38, plus many more planes most in flying condition! I had forgotten that, but then noticed drip pans under most of the aircraft!
Anyway, a couple of things mentioned about the P-38 was that the early models were best suited for warmer climates since the pilot was not sitting behind a hot engine! I did not realize how cold it could be in European theatre until I was told that it could be -50F at an open waist-gun B-17 position at 25,000 feet.
On the plus side, the concentrated armament, which fired straight ahead instead of converging, gave both concentration and extra range. While it's true that other aircraft had more than 5 weapons, this was apparently a very powerful arrangement.
Plus the extra engine for safety on long missions.....

At that altitude it is always cold (IIRC normal is about -35Celcius)...and not only in Europe;)
