Said i wasn't going to come back here for a while, but...No rap for this fly white guy. Have some old Public Enemy- 911 is a joke (pre 911). That album still is relevant today. Maybe even more so.

I already posted this vid, but I want everyone to actually listen this time. The story is that Herman Brood was a Dutch rocker with drug, depression and various other mental problems. He was moderately successful in the Netherlands for a period, but could never get that break to go big time like some other Dutch bands. That was mostly because he was nuts, I think. He did manage to bang Nina Hagen (99 red balloons, or 99 luftballons for you Europeans) for a while, which was an accomplishment because Nina was banging most of the men in Europe back then, but slowed down and just banged Herman for a while, so he had that going for him. Until she dumped him.
He eventually sank into oblivion even in his home country as he drowned himself in the drugs and booze. Failing in music, he began painting. Really awful paintings that nobody would buy unless they were as drunk, drugged and crazy as Herman. Which was nobody - because even in Amsterdam nobody was as messed up as him.
Towards the end of his life he started on his own drug rehab program - his plan was to quit all the other drugs and just drink a quart of whiskey and shoot up two grams of amphetamines a day. That seemed like a good idea to him and he was really proud and telling everyone how he had cut down and was on his way back to being almost unknown instead of just unknown.
Then, in 2001 he jumped off the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton head first which finally got him the exposure he needed. He was dead so he couldn't take advantage of it, but everyone that owned a piece of him made some money re-releasing his songs and selling his crap paintings. He was kind of like that other crazy Dutchman, Vincent Van Gogh, but without the talent.

Anyway, I do love his soulful rendition of this classic song. Knowing his story, and knowing he was suicidal for most of his life and always at the "final curtain", I think he really understood it and got at the heart of the song.

It is a powerful rendition. The video was well done. Even better than any Sinatra.

Totally agree MrG. Thinking lead singers often detract from the music. Their egos get in the way. Enjoy listening to big band especially from ww2, jazz as well. Let the music do the talking.
In party mode, singing brings the group together.

Listening to Melbourne's* own Boy and Bear. Good thinking music.

    Edit: Sydney's own.

Nice, subtle folk indie rock. Similar to Fleet Foxes and Fleetwood Mac.
