Well I spent two hours trying to find a particular version of Vivaldi's Concerto for two Mandolins in G . I lost my CD and am distraught, I only like one recording and dumb me failed to write down exactly who recored it. I did the same thing some years ago with Tomaso Albinoni's Oboe Concerto.. All I had to do was to burn two more ! You would think an old dog unable to learn new tricks could at least remember old ones !!!!
Try to find your favorite recording of RV532 HERE. My favorite is by James Tyler, Robin Jeffrey, conducted by Trevor Pinnock (PS: The last 3 tracks on Vol 1/5 of Vivaldi - English Consort - Trevor Pinnock) . I wish you luck in looking for your favorite recording. I know how it is, all are almost perfect but small finesse makes a huge difference.
Particularly the "Winter Suite" to me, I also like his piccolo concerto but, curses, by only a few people. I realized I was getting old when I discovered I only like somethings a certain way !!
I see, I prefer to listen that famous concerto early in the morning. Nigel Kennedy, re-invented that for me, He's a bit non-conventional but powerful and quite refreshing. I guess Vivaldi would have loved his playing too.
Tamino, many many thanks ! I feel like a detective getting a clue in a cold case !! I will check out your link and the guys you like. You are spot on, it is not that one recording is good, the next bad or even acceptable, the differences are in emphasis, tempo, musicians themselves . Many are subtle yet vastly different to the ear. And some vary tremendously. I think it is these differences and varieties that keep classical music alive. China is producing huge quantities of youg musicians interestingly playing the music of long dead European composers. My missing copy of Albinoni's Oboe concerto was preformed by a woman flutist named Sara Harkness. Obviously obscure and no better than a dozen more but to0 my old ear, aural gold. Still gave me goose bumps after decades, or when ever CD's came out. Well no drawing tonight, I have hunting to do.....many thanks , again. Gaines
Gaines, I own 14 versions of Goldberg Variations, two of them are transcripts for strings. Notes are the same but there are still fourteen musical works, each with own sound, character, atmosphere etc. Enjoy the music - it enriches deeply.
