according to www.onwar.com the T-34 could get roughly twice as much milage from a unit of fuel as a Sherman could.
Paazerman: Range for the gas powered Shermans varied from 161km to 209km (M4A3/75). The M4A4 diesel Sherman's range was 241km. sinissa'a point is valid, the T-34s had better fuel economy than the Shermans.[/quote]
The synthetic petrol was made by the "Fischer-Tropsch" process developed in the twenty in gemany , it is suitable only for making light hydrocarbons from gas, usualy carbon monoxide, it's very bad for making heavy hydrocarbon like diesel . the heavier the fuel the better the energy output per volume , usualy the longer it take to get the engine up to speed -lpg .............. low energy density ....... great stuff to use -petrol .........good energy density ....... no problem to use and store -diesel .........excelent energy density... need some time and care -bunker oil....the best energy density....anything less than a ship , forget it ! this process has bee used by the south african government in the Sasol plants during aparteid , it is cost effective when the price of petrol reach the ~ 85..90$ a barrel , it is also way more dirty CO2 wise than using straight oil . diesel was a german ,he invented the engine , why the germans kept using petrol rather than diesel is to me a mystery , it's usually posible to get more fuel out of a barrel of oil as diesel than petrol !! I suspect the dead hand of a long forgoten technical sub-comitee  .
