No problem. Been answering questions from all over the Earth the past few days. Coober Pedy wants to know!
Yes, I have friends in some very weird places. Two of my oldest friends live in a town just east of Darwin, NT, Australia. They have offered Boss Lady and me shelter if the election goes bad in November.
That was the last ship my nephew served on. He was getting ready to deploy when he died in a motorcycle accident in 2016. Had a job with the beachmasters I believe.
Just to keep things confusing, the name Bon Homme Richard was assigned to CV-10 of the Essex class carriers of WWII (see, we're back on topic ), but while she was under construction she was renamed Yorktown since the previous Yorktown (CV-5) had been sunk at Midway. The name Bon Homme Richard was then reassigned to CV-31. The same thing happened with the Essex class Hornet, Lexington, and Wasp which were originally going to be Kearsarge, Cabot, and Oriskany.
Yes. The roof of the bridge structure also has several large burn throughs, and the forward radar mast has collapsed.
I used to work directly above that "one million gallons of fuel" (on Peleliu and any ship where I was in Main Propulsion.)
I looked up turning radius for USS Kidd, 620 meters or .38 mile. If we apply the Mk. 1, Mod. 1 eyeball...
On the overnight, the Bonhomme Richard took on a port list, causing the Navy to evacuate all firefighters inside the ship. The USN is not catching any breaks fighting this fire.
I fought one fire on Peleliu that had my shoe soles sticking to the deck plates. Much fun. Would buy again.
Fire is finally out...Now will she live or get turned into razor blades? And rounding out this trifecta, the annual "Rolling of heads."
Stubborn Navy says "Fix that shit, that'll show that fire!" Sane Navy says "Not yet! Let's see if it's cost effective." Everyday Navy says "I have no idea what 'cost effective' means."
Update - The Navy is set to remove the electronics masts from the island. Damage assessment is ongoing.
Ok... I live in Palmo...that should be 30 clicks south of Darwin. You would luv it here...much newer than Darwin, one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, plenty of ex and serving military live here too. In the suburb I live in, Durack, there are 12 man made lakes (really a part of the drainage system)...full of fish and turtles, there are signs saying “you are ALLOWED to fish’...Barramundi of course...so much food that the water birds live here too...I live 50m from a quality golf course that uses the lakes as traps...I think you would dig it...
