V2 and warhead

    Okay, the Germans built several, attempted to launch at least one that ended in failure. But, the fact remains that the A4b / A9 design was seriously flawed and would not have worked in any case. Eventually, it was going to have to be abandoned. We know that in hindsight and from over half a century of development since.

    Post war the US also fiddled with such a system experimentally on a minor scale. Their attempts in this area failed equally badly and were abandoned. The system just didn't work and that is why you don't see it in service today.

    Further review finds that two A-4b were launched.
    The first was fired on 12/27/44. It lifted off and almost immediately rolled out of control and crashed. This failure was attributed to the inability of the control system to maintain stability with the added wings.

    A second was fired in late January 1945. This one successfully climbed to altitude, spinning out of control on reentry. It was guardedly considered a success.

    Although several more A-4b were built no more were launched.
