I didn't think any of the units engaged in Nordwind achieved their objectives, though they did manage to throw the Allied supreme command into a major crisis when De Gaulle refused to give up Strasbourg. Exactly what was the job of the 6th SS in this offensive?
Well, they took and held Wingen-sur-Moder. That town was supposed to be used as a jump off point for the armored units behind them. Unfortunately, the armor went somewhere else, and KG Nord was eventually ordered to fall back. Read a very good account of that battle in Seven Days in January, by Wolf Zoepf.
The German offensive in the Alsace was bogged down by its lack of troops and supplies, especially fuel. Although 10th SS came close to capture Strasbourg -the objective- the offensive was a waste of men and supplies.
Welcome back Steiner! The offensive was a waste not because its objectives in terms of terrain weren't met, but because its objective of drawing troops away from the Bulge was met only after the most significant German troops in that area had been beaten back and thrown into disarray. Allied command appears to have thought the Ardennes to be a first priority, followed by a largely mop-up operation in the Alsace by 10th Corps.
