I have looked for support for that idea, and haven't found anything that I would consider supportive at the highest levels except in an ex post facto way.. Anybody got anything?

Indeed. I also couldn't find anything whether the Germans have bombed Perl Harbour or Japan was bombed as a retaliation for sinking Titanic. Strange? I still don't know where A-58 and fotmerjudgehead have found that. Any clue?

I think that was aboard either U-235 or U-238.

That plan fell through when the Polar bear guards demanded to be paid in penguins.

Let me address these four statements:

    1. Germans bombing Pearl Harbor.
    2. (Japanese) sinking the Titanic
    3. Toga....toga....toga....toga!
    4. (Bombing) ... more to impress the Soviet Union than to cow Japan.

Statements 1 and 2 can be proven as factually wrong.
Statement 3 could be considered as a result of typing error (could be: Torra! Torra! Torra! ...) or I am wrong, what is very likely.

Validity of the statement 4, however, depends on frankness of a politician. Purely from the view of logics the statement 4 can not be rejected as false because it depends on something very questionable: truthfulness of a politician.

Could someone help me to reject the statement 4 as false?

With enough digging we might find comments by someone in the know that thought this might be a benefit of the bombs, but there's nothing to show that it was ever an official or even unofficial goal for the US.

    Fair enough.

Al Capone wasn't convicted as mafioso but for tax evasion because "there was nothing to show that" he was a gangster. Evidence was carefully hidden.

EDIT: But, please, note that the subject of this conversation is not a legal one - it is rather the question if there is reasonable justification of excessive violence exerted against the defeated enemy. Or more directly: is there any justification for beating someone laying uncociously on the floor, without any chance whatsoever to defend?
