You need to blame my history professors. I fully intended to get a Ph.D in Folklore or History but my professors convinced me that history is a great avocation but too risky as an occupation. I had taken my GRE and started the application process but they started talking about the salaries of history professors and scared me off!
I've had a great many people say I should have been a lawyer and I usually retort something like "Why?! Do I really look that stupid?!" or, "Well, before that happens I'd resort to smuggling drugs.... at least that is a halfway honest profession....!" You might note that I don't have alot of respect for the legal profession. After all, it is 99% of lawyers that give the other 1% an evil reputation.
They're like Cops, Politicians, and the local town "Yap". Even when they're not working, they are. Always playing 20 questions, compiling a "dossier", and looking for a weak spot to exploit for an advantage. No wonder many Union officers in the Civil War were lawyers. They had the instinctive mindset for attack without mercy or regard for their own men. Learn to leave things alone. Don't meddle. Until that day ... you'll find "shields up", and evasive maneuvers at warp eight.
I would not go quite that far. All of the lawyers I know feel the same way about the ambulence chasers that you likely feel. They seem unprofessional and mercenary. That said, they do provide a service to a sector of the public that could not otherwise afford representation and that is a good thing. As for me, when I was in practice, I worked for only one company developing software licensing procedures and handling day to day operational matters. I did not deal with individuals as much as I dealt with other companies. Not very exciting but at least I never had to bill by the hour!
Get all the math and science you can, there will always be a demand for those skills. Ever thought about making airplanes? Do you do any work in Casa Grande? I am an engineer. I build airplanes. One hole at a time. Did we have a thread like this before... I seem to remember having to confess that I was a nerd. Anyway. Law school is cheap, it only costs your soul. No hard feelings some of my best friends are lawyers.
I'm a project controller. I organise budgets and schedules, information flows, then keep track of work to keep things within schedule and if possible under budget. Not always possible, with the good help of smart-alec contractors as some I know, but we try to keep their overruns under control Did a large mine, railways, a football stadium, a few factories, etc, etc. Have been inactive for a while as I lost my job last August, but to be frank I did welcome that as I got divorced soon after and I wouldn't wish this kind of a divorce upon my worst enemy! Combining the usual work stress (very heavy in my line) with these family troubles would be recipe for madness, so in a skewed way these "long vacations" were a boon. Anyway, I'm getting back in business, I have some revamping to do in an airport, and next year I'm counting on being involved in a highspeed railway or a refinery.
Well Za, it appears in a couple of years we might be colleagues (one of the companies wich my college sends interns to is a company wich deals with transports and sustainable development and they're highly involved in the TGV and such ) Cheers...
Ran a metals shop with the USN for years. Didn't make airplanes but I did make GSE off and on. Right now Phoenix metro, Tucson, and Oracle. Nothing in Casa Grande. I could if there I had customers there.
Currently Texas Ambassador to Ohio. Started out as an Air Med Tech in the USAF and then transferred over as a Computer Programmer in a Mobile Communications Unit. That was plenty of fun. After the USAF, went into the Information Technology field as hatchetman for the technical support department of software companies.
Consulting Civil Engineer in North Idaho - got a small engineering/surveying consulting business with my brother - most of our work is highway construction type stuff - but also do subdivisions, sewer, water, stormwater management and pretty much whatever else comes in the door. It makes a decent living in a truly beautiful part of the country .... I'm satisfied. -whatever -Lou
"Whatever comes in the door", now there's an answer! That and make "Chicken Soup out of Chicken Feet". We can fix anything but a broken Heart...but it's better if you call us first. Been past Lookout mountain many times, almost hit a Moose once on the way down. It is beautiful. I ring the "bell" on the Jerry Springer show. (I do this from home)
Now I know why the sense of humour seems familiar My husband is civil tech former journeyman carpenter who does project management. Now it is for steel fabricator combined with being an estimator.
Hi; I work on a railroad sorting out freight cars-"kind of like a blackjack dealer except that the "cards" weigh 30-120 ton". Eeehaaah! JeffinMNUSA
Hi Kai, your ever-so-prophetic cos that's what your American counterpart, is going to do to me sometime later this year.
I'm an Air Raid Warden-------sorry, that was in my other life Lets see: I've had jobs doing: Newspaper delivery, Pizza Delivery, Phonebook delivery, Painter, Roofer, Small Business Owner, back to delivery, photographer for a newspaper, Correctional Officer, Trapper, Convience Store Clerk & Security at a major super-store chain. Currently, im working part-time loading a bunch of trucks full of sticks, at a Lumberyard-until I get my health issues solved.
Indeed I shall. I was a decent B+ - C range student this year but I'm really aiming for A's and B's next year, I'm picking things up for my upperclassman years because I realize their importance. By the end of High school I intend to have. 4 years of History, 4 years of English, 2-3 years of Foreign Language, 4 years of Math, 3 years of Science, 2 years of Art, and 10 seasons of Sports (2 JV Soccer, 4 Varsity Wrestling, 2 JV Lacrosse, and 2 Varsity Lacrosse). I think I'm pretty well balanced overall.
