I don't think you have any idea what we are talking about, since a quick check of IMDB reveals that - oh my - all the actors are born in the UK, mostly in England, though with a few Irish and Scots thrown in!
Hi F/ the ORIGINAL series ran for 5 years-and was exported to the USA, I just don't know exactly when we got it here? Lady Marian Fitzwalter was played by pretty Bernadette O'Farrell-who was an Irish born Actress. The main man himself was from England. I can't say anything about the other main characters like the Gent who played Littlejohn-Archie Duncan? I believe? Im sure he's English born. Also, I don't know if it was a temporary replacement for him or not? but another guy played Littlejohn in some episodes. I liked Archie Duncan better. I forget the Chaps name who played Friar Tuck? Anyway, the show aired for 5 seasons and wasn't a bad show at all. I just wish that the series was restored by some reputable Studios and then released for sale. The versions I have are not good ones at all and was released by someplace called Mill Creek Studios or something simular? Anyway, the series is Public Domaine and will not likely ever have any real money spent on it for restoration-which is a dirty shame. PS, if your also thinking of The Adventures of Robin Hood, which had Errol Flynn in it as "the main man himself" well as the ever beautiful Olivia de Havilland as Lady Marion, Patrick Knowles (Prince John?), Basil Rathbone (as the Sheriff of Nottingham) and other noticable faces. Well, Flynn was Born on Tasmainia which is part of Australia-so he certainly qualifies as being British born, and any other versions I have seen of Robin Hood, had UK actors and such in the main roles with the exception of Olivia de Havilland, and also in Lady Marion which had Audrey Hepburn as the Lady Marion, and Sir Sean Connery as the main man himself. There was another Robin Hood movie I saw years ago-can't remember the title or the man mans name? possibly? Barrie Ingraham????? anyway, I thought that movie was a very well made Robin Hood movie and thought it could almost equal the Flynn/De Havilland movie. I mention Sir Sean Connery because he is a Scot ;-)) Now as for the garbage version with Kevin Costner as the main man, his version more than sucked Prune Pits. Even Robin Hood, Men in Tights beat that lousy piece of garbage. Anyway, Musso is absolutely correct about who was from where and such on the actors who played in various movies about the legendary outlaw. I almost forgot that in three different movies (all American Hollywood productions including the one with Flynn in it) that the Gent who played Littlejohn in all three of those movies-was none other than American Character Actor by the name of Alan Hale Sr.-Dad to the Gent who played the Skipper on Gilligans Island for 3 seasons-Alan Hale Jr. ;-)) Anyway, Alan Hale Sr. has the sole distinction of being the only person to play the same character in three different movies dealing with he same story and also over 3 decades. Hope this info sets the record a bit clearer for those who don't know much about the various versions of Robin Hood on film ;-)) I forgot to mention for Musso but, yep-it ran for 5 seasons and I think all are now out on DvD? I know at least aseason 3 is and most likely season 4. Ill have to check to refresh my bad memory. What I hate about DDDvD.com is that they charge more for a season that Wally-World (aka) Wal-Mart) did. I bought the first two seasons from WM for $5 bucks. I knew the quality wasn't great seeing at who printed these for sale. But for $5 bucks per season-I was won over and started collecting them. At DDDvD-they are I think $8.99? or something like that? Still I guess that's not a bad price to pay for a season of any show ;-))
Currently watching on the Tube: Ulzanas Raid which has Burt Lancaster in it as an Army Scout and Richard Jaeckel as a Cavalry Sergeant. Not a b ad Western but not great. Now after this is over, Shenandoah will be played. This IS a great Civil War Western. Has James Stewart, Patrick Wayne, Philipp Alford & Glenn Corbett-as three of his six Sons, Paul Fix (as the Doctor) George Kennedy as a Union Army Colonel, James Best & Harry Carey Jr. as two Confederates who escaped a union PoW camp-along with Strother Martin as the Union Army PoW Train Conductor, and finally Doug McClure as the Confederate 1st Lieutenant who marries his Daughter-played by Katherine Ross? And as an honorable mention, another Gent besides Paul Fix and Harry Carey Jr. who worked with Duke in many movies-Edward Faulkner-is the bearded Yankee Sergeant who captures Philipp Alford (The Boy) and sets "free" Alfords "slave" friend. ;-)) Forgot to also mention Denver Pyle-who most excellently plays the Pastor Fieorli (SP?) This movie was tailor made for John Wayne for the lead role but, he was busy at the time and could not do the movie. This is one of the best Westerns one could hope to see since its a non-John Wayne Western.
C.Evans - we're talking about a different series too. This one features Jonas Armstrong as Robin Hood and a bunch of other actors we've never heard of...Season 4 is on BBCA right now (sunday nights) and Season 3 is not released to DVD until January (so i am recording the Hoods right now). Here is a link or two: "Robin Hood" (2006) and Robin Hood - BBC America
Hi Musso, I was afraid of it being the new series. I have heard about it and I THINK it played on HBO? but have never seen any episodes. This one must be pretty good though and ill also order it on Netflix ;-)) If you do get the chance to watch the original Tv series, do so as its not bad for a mid-to late 50s production. ;-))
Currently watching a classic Western: Warlock, which has three favorites of mine in it: Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn and Richard Widmark. Slated for this evening, probably my 100th or so viewing of Rio bravo w/ you guessed it-Duke, Dean Martin, Claude Akins, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond (briefly) Angie Dickenson, Pedro Gonzalez-Gonzalez & Ricky Nelson. Geesus, all of them are now gone except for Angie. :-( After this classic, possibly: Chisum. Update ;-)) Stayed up late enought o watch Rio Bravo through-both times. Did so because of staying online so darned long last night because of another possible major ilitaria deal I might have going on ;-))
Watched Operation Daybreak Friday & got the black & white one coming in the post + started watching Private Schulz witch is worth watching but a bit slow at the start
Watched Operation Crossbow last night on CH5...Man I have not seen that film for a good 10 years. Still a good film for its time.
This evening, I watched the fery well-made European production of a movie called: Joyeux Noel. Cheers to the person on this site for teling me about this great movie.
I took my dad to see "Joyeux Noel" when it first came out. We went to lunch and wandered around the Barnes & Noble bookstore next door waiting for the show to start. It was a great day with my dad. My mom doesn't like for him to watch the shoot'em ups too much anymore because they cause him to have bad nightmares more frequently now since he's older. Too much shootin' and fightin' in Korea when he was a young man, and he never quite shook it after coming home. This movie didn't get to him as much as SPR and the BoB series did though.
Hi A/ glad you all liked it ;-)) I had a good feeling about the movie when I first started it. This one for those who likes foreign productions like I do, is a MUST for any movie collection and it would be a great movie to add to a mini marathon of movies that you might have that take place at Christmastime. Every year I watch and in this order too, Boys Town w/ Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney and Bobs Watson. Then I watch the 1935 version of: Mutiny on the Bounty w/ Charles Laughton as Captn Bleigh, Clark Gable as Mr. Christian and Franchot Tone. Next is: Sergeant York w/ Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. Then: It's a Wonderful Life w/ James Stewart and Ward Bond. Then finally: The Ten Commandments w/ Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner and Edw.G. Robinson. Christmas movie viewing can't get no better than this line-up. ;-)) Watched another Classic James Francis Cagney black & white classic: The Lady Killers. A most excellent movie. Its still an earlier Cagney movie but you could easily tell how great he was going to become-from watching him in this one. Though he played second fiddle to Edw.G.Robinson in Smart Money-as well as being fairly prominently seen in The Mayor of Hell, you could see easily at how great he would become ;-))
This evening was damned good on TCM. The Wreck of the Mary Deare, w/ three late greats: Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston and Sir Richard Harris. Pursuit of the Graf Spee w/ Anthony Quayle. I had not seen this movie for about 30 years and found it to still be as boring as I remembered-like watching concrete dry. Also, the German ""uniforms"" were absolutely horrible. >:-(( More Bogart: The African Queen with Bogie, Kate Hepburn and Theodor Bikel. Ah, what a great classic ;-))
Didn't catch it from the beginning not its title but I saw something old and in B&W - which had Charles Laughton in it as some sort of French Law Enforcement Authority and this was set to the background of the French Revolution. It was a pretty darn good movie from what I was able to catch. Earlier this evening--Clint Eastwood as Josey Wales in: The Outlaw Josey Wales. As far as im concerned, this is Clints best Western movie made.
