Been watching many Westerns and War Movies including: Rio Bravo, LAw and Order, Wake Island, Guadalcanal Diary & Halls of Montzuma.
Just finished the Director's Cut of Das Boot, great movie! SPOILERS AHEAD CAPTAIN! I don't understand why the original author thinks the movie is similar to a "propaganda" film one might have seen during the war. The scene where the British sailors are left to die by both the British Navy and the U Boat crew (albeit the latter had a "better" reason to leave) was a very powerful scene that screamed anti war. The ending can also be seen in such a way. "You don't want the British to think they've killed children" is also another quote that brings about the seriousness of the war. I haven't read the book but for all I know it could touch on it more. One thing I did find interesting was that BMW was given an acknowledgment for their role in development during the credits. I assume they helped build the U Boats and other stuff but given the companies past during the war I'm surprised they touched material about the German side no less! While they mostly worked with the Wehrmacht rumors of BMW and the Concentration camps have come to light in recent years. The release itself isn't so good, I watched it in German with English subtitles, I know enough German to realize the subtitles weren't "getting the full picture", often skipping on dialog or abbreviating things, various grammatical errors were also present. (It's, Its, etc being a bulk of them) The various dialog options seemed funny, I tried to avoid them as much as possible but sometimes I would switch over to them, I think they re-recorded for each dub (Dolby 5.1, 2.0, etc) since the voices did not sounds the same. Das Boot definitely has one of the better English dubs in comparison to the ones done by people with heavy English accents who must be phoning into the recording studios. The casing was super cheap, it was using something called a "green case" which is essentially one that cuts down on packaging or to the studio, packaging costs! No pamphlet was included and it came on a "flip disc" which would be ok if the entire movie was on one side! The sides were poorly labeled to boot, usually flip discs would have widescreen on one side and 4:3 on the other. The transfer and 5.1 dub was great though, I picked my copy up for $10 so I guess it wasn't so bad. I only hope a Blu Ray is done soon, a proper one too, since Sony owns the catalog now I think we might see one soon. Edit: "Check out the Johanns on him!" is probably the best quote ever!
Rio Bravo one of the all time greats. Walter Brennan plays such a good role. I have never seen him play a young man even when he was making movies in the 30s. Always the old slow moving guy. I watched Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and tonight it is going to be White Christmas. The staple movie of the Christmas season.
Watched Marine Raiders (Pat O'Brien and Robert Ryan) and Flying Tigers (John Wayne, for the 7th time this year I think). Nothing like the classics, although Marine Raiders did get a bit trite at the end.
You got that right. Stumpy (Brennan) was a great character actor. Whoo hoo hoo hoot. Oh stop cacklin'. Errol Flynn as Robin hood, is THE best person ever to play RH. Olivia de Havilland, the best Lady Marion Fitzwalter-and the prettiest too. Thank God she is still alive.
Just a heads up.. Casablance on TCM tonight at 10PM Eastern. Great flick; maybe my all time favorite.
Another great film Patrick Wayne is in that I think. He is also in Mister Roberts another all time great. The beautiful Natalie Wood is in the Searchers fresh from Rebel without a cause. Even Harry Cary Jr. is in the film as well who joins the Duke for several more movies. By the way Carl on Walter Brennan did you ever watch the tv series The real McCoy's alway's thought he was chosen perfect for that role. Enjoy your movie pal.
I wasn't able to catch Casablanca but I did get to watch: Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I love that movie and especially the Alfonso Bedoya "signature line" of: " We Got No Badges, We Aint Got No Badges, We Dont Need No Steeeeenkin Badges!!"   Cracks me up everytime. ;-)) Oops, forgot to reply to ya above: but, yep, it was as enjoyable as ever ;-))
Hi 107th, Pat Wayne was good in The Searchers-as well as the entire cast. That Western is THE PERFECT Western w/ a tie with: Stagecoach. Winchester 73-w/ James Stewart, comes in a close 2nd IMO. Harry Carey Jr is still alive and has a website you can contact him through and you cna get his autograph too. He also personally answere fans emails to him. I THINK his email addy is: yo@harrycarey.com I THINK??? I did get a chance to watch some episodes of The Real McCoys and agree-Walter Brennan was perfect for that role. Richard Crenna (SP?) was one of his Sons. Forgot to mention that tonight, i will finally get around to watching Team America-which was brought to you by the guys who do South Park. Im lookiing forward to a few laughs ;-))
Its“a Rita Hayworth theme night on Finnish "history channel". First a document on her life and then "Gilda"...
went the day well (1942) A quiet English village is visited unexpectedly by a platoon of 'Royal Engineers'. When the soldiers are revealed as German troops, the villagers stage a fightback.
Watched War Dogs of the Pacific again today, sat there and cried my damn fool eyes out (again) Just me and Finnegan my Dobie. He looked at me in disgust and embarrassment.
Richard, ya can't go wrong with watching: The Odessa File. I like it more and more everytime I see it. In fact, it's the only Jon Voight movie I like. tonight if i cna manage? im going to watch Team America. I hope it's not as stupid as it looks to be? or I wasted $5 bucks on it.
