One of the best by Van Johnson I think this won an academy award. It does a good job putting a human side to the war. I especially like the part where Van is cooking an egg and the squad is moving up before he gets it done. So, he just puts his helmet on and lets the yolk run. In a documentery on Van (maybe on youtube) the director had him put his helmet on to show him as a soldier who didn't care he had already seen to much.
I was watching Hitler's bodyguards on the military channel.. but unfortunately I fell asleep half way through. oh well, it's been a long day
My Dad likes to watch the movies of Chuck Norris though if I'm asked, I tend to gravitate more on the earlier movies of Steven Seagal. I just gave my Dad a copy of a WWII Audie Murphy movie. That will be our "fireworks" for the New Year. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones and keep on backing John Wayne and I'll do the same for Clint Eastwood whenever it's appropriate, hehehe! Just finished watching "Top Secret" and all it's hilarious take on classic WWII themes.
Just returned from a trip to WalMart. On Carl's advice, I checked the $5.00 DVD bin and came up with a 2 volume set of the original Victory at Sea. 26 episodes in all. Once I finish with WW II in HD, these are in the queue.
::Watch this last night and thought the file footage was great.:: The Caine Mutiny and The Bridge at Remagen are waiting in the DVR for next week.
Hi 107th, thanks for the "skinny" on Jay Silverheels. He was a darn great actor and, I always liked the sound of his deep voice--Kemosabe ;-)) When I have mnore time? im going to see about checking out more things on Jay Silverheels. I didn't know there was a website on him? One site that I used to haunt frequently was one called:The Old Corral-and is absolutely the ebst site on Westerns-TV-Movie, and the folks who acted in them.
Hi Fal, I too also like Seagals earlier films. I got hooked on his stuff after Norris's star started to fade a bit. Seagals latest efforts are terrible though. Heh heh, To Hell and Back is a great movie and glad Audie got to portray himself even though at first he wanted someone else to portray him. I also finally got around to watching some other long sought after movies-one of which was Clint Eastwood in: Grand Torino-which I thought was a great movie though I hate seeing Clint (or Duke for that matter?) die in any movie.
Thanks Lou ;-)) Also, I too watched Battleground when TCM played it. I never tire of that film nor of Sgt. Kennie singing "Whatever Happened To Jody?" at the end of the movie. Sadly, the only major star in that film still living-and thankfully he is so--is James Arness-who is in his 90s. We lost Sgt. Kennie in Feb this year, PVT Roderiguez late last year and nad Sgt Holley-earlier in 2008. ;-(
just for the fun of it I turned on Rear Window about an hour and a half ago, and am still watching it sort of "over my shoulder" as I type. It is about forty-five minutes from the end right now. Bye bye, buy bonds.
Chuck Norris in his "Missing in Action" movies trilogy. After that, I think ill finish watching both seasons of: Zorro. ;-))
Oh and just a couple days ago, I saw the 1949 classic: Battleground-whown on TCM. "Whatever Happened To Jody"? James Whitmore Sr. was great as Sgt. Kennie-and also great at his Cadence tunes too (which he had personal experiance with while in the Marines) Speaking of battleground. Im currently fighting for an original MGM studio release, of a great still from this movie. The still shows 5 of the Screaming Eagles (front) George Murphy, Van Johnson and John hodiak, left side view of "Kipp" Kippton-Douglas Fowley) and the back view of Marshall Thompson. The captioning on the backside mistakenly says thet gent with back to the camera is Douglas Fowley-when in fact you can easily make him out as the GI seen in side view. Either way, im hoping to score this original MGM release photo. Its a great shot of all these actors in a scene shortly before the 4 Germans come to "offer" Gen McAuliffe his "Surrender" terms.
Hi Michelle, that is a great site I had not seen before and thank you for it ;-)) Ill be spending more time there and will also pass this site off to the fine folks at JWMB ;-))
A part 1 of a 2-part document on Einsatzgruppen by Kuiv productions/France 2/Planéte tonight on telly...
Watching Nova on PBS and they have a story about the attack on Pearl Harbor and the possibility that a Japanese Midget sub was able to successfully fire two torpedoes in Pearl Harbor.
Missed out on that Battleground photo but, I MIGHT have a chance at two Audie Murphy photos-of him in: To Hell and Back. Anyway, to keep on topic-all I watched yesterday was the news-then played a round of Age of Empires on the puter-since that's about all I can do with my puter piece of garbage..
Watched a doc about the Sen-Toku submarines on the National Geographic channel. This coincides with the discovery of one such sub off Oahu not too long ago by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory. Informative, but only a few clips of the wreck was shown which was disappointing to say the least.
