Okay Carl I have "the Guns Of Navarone" taped and hope to have time to watch that in a few days. I'll see if I can catch one of the older "goodies' this weekend.
I am new to the forum, but have enjoyed this section, and the section on the books. I am watching a great series that I picked up at the library. It is called "Heimat" by Edgar Reitz. It is German, with english subtitles. It is 15 hours long. It is about a Hunsruck village in Germany between 1919 -1982. It have given me quite a different perspective of the Germans under Hitler and I am really hooked watching this series. It starts with a family, and the children and moves through all the different characters and relationships, love stories, stories about the children growing up, going off to war, etc. This family is a simple German family, on a farm, no phones then, no radio, etc. Then of course with time , changes come to this small village. I have to say I would not have thought twice about watching this, but for some reason I took it home and watch it every night. It is really great. Here is information on it and you can decide if you are interested in seeing it. Heimet: Inside the Chronicle, Facets Video, Chicago. (Facets Multimedia) As I mentioned, I got it at our local library. JK
Welcome to the site and hope you will find lots of things of interest iin this area. Watching more Tour of Duty then will be starting about 30 movies I have bought but not seen.
Hi Ray, I dont think i ever saw Burton in that movie but I have at least heard of it. Is it any good? Its on DvD now.
Kokoda (2006) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokoda_(film) Thought this was pretty good although obviously a smaller budget movie. 8/10 from me.
Late last night i struggeled to keep awake (not from boredom just from tiredom0 to watch a great Fox war classic: The Desert Fox. James mason plays the Fox (did so in tow movies-the other of course-The Desert Rats) and also had Richard Boone and Jessica Tandy in it.
Not exactly WW2 related, but tomorrow (Wednesday) on TCM, it's all Lauren Bacall. 8PM EDT is To Have and Have Not with Bogart. A must see.
:camo::camo: I went and saw this at the pictures when it came out in 2006. It was very dark and gritty with not a whole load of plot. I think it would be a very difficult to really capture the conditions of Kokoda. A whole lot of mud. But it is still worthwhile viewing.
Since Carl mentioned Errol Flynn, my Dad and I decided to check our movie collection and picked "They Died With Their Boots On." Nice way to spend some quality time with Dad on a weekend. We followed that up with "The Longest Day" (never get tired of that movie) and a Sean Connery Bond, "Thunderball." Incidentally, Connery announced a couple of days ago on his 80th birthday that his acting days are over.
Got more for you my friend. A new Flynn box set is out and has a few movies in it never before on either or both, VHS and DvD, Set includes: Desperate Journey (one ive waited long long time for) Edge of Darkness (another I suffered a long wait for release for) Objective Burma-seen and have on DvD, and a couple more. Damn, it is confirmed then? I think Sir Connery quit making movies about 3 or so years ago and hollywood can be blamed for that one as he got very disgusted with the lot of em. Forgot to mention that since yesterday on AMC was John Wayne Saturday, I saw more of his movies including: On Wings Of Eagles and two western favorites of mine: Hondo and The Horse Soldiers. Today on TCM, I cought part of In Harms Way, before leaving the house ;-)) Dukle is Nr 1-and will always be Nr 1-top actor and fan favorite.
I just watched 'Dunkirk' (finally). I thought it pretty good. I saw many of the events that I have read about on the topic. The state of the beach and surrounding area was well shown pretty much as I have imagined it from the writings as well as photos i have seen. Well worth watching I think.
I just watched The Desert Rats with Richard Burton again last night, and am watching Into the Storm this afternoon. The last one is the HBO production, and I expect it will be pretty good since it deals with Sir Winston and his early foray into WW2 and seems well received by the critics.
Into the Storm was pretty good, but I think they tried to put too much history into one film. It would have been nice to have at least one more movie in there. Also, as I really enjoyed the Gathering Storm, I wish Albert Finney would have played Churchill again. I think he nailed that role.
