"City of Life and Death", about Nanjing... we've done a few threads on that film. Absolutely horrific and yet so astonishingly accurate.

I just finished the FX series Over There, only lasted a season, but I thought it had promise for a TV show.

I hate to cry fowl on a news source, but this Mail Online headline is a crock. It takes a comment out of context and makes it the story, while burying the truth deep in the article.

Yes it gave her much grief because she ignored Speilbergs advice to wait till she was old enough to understand to watch the film.

    But.

What anyone not willing to go past the first half of the article would never know is that is now proud and honored to tell that story in her small part.

Personally I think this film is one of a few that anyone with the remotest wish to understand the war MUST See.

I've always been a bit suspicious of the Mail, despite its penchant for running WW2 stories. There are too many cases where the editors of the paper go for the sensational when the real truth is buried. This seems to illustrate that theory.

I'm glad this thread popped back up. A few weeks ago, I watched (again) one of the best WWII naval films of all time. The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens.

This 1957 film is based on the novel by retired British Captain Denys Rayner, one of the key players in anti-submarine warfare in the North Atlantic. In the film (shot in rich technicolor like you don't see any more) an American Buckley class destroyer commanded by Robert Mitchum goes after a U-boat commanded by Curt Jurgens in the South Atlantic. They lay out many of the little strategies and tactics used by both sides in the U-boat war. The action switches back and forth between Mitchum and Jurgens as they try to kill each other, and survive.

It's really an excellent film from any point of view. I'd rate it right up there with Das Boot, but you'll actually learn more about the technical side of the war from this film.

"Wake me when it's over" with Ernie Kovaks and Dick Shawn. Air Force version of McHales Navy but not as good. The original not that dud with Tom Arnold. Kind of lame but they actually landed a P-51 with only one wheel down for the film. Much of the background had WW2 era props that were real such as over a dozen P51 canopies for a gazebo roof and belly tanks for planters. What can I say, it was the only thing on late night.

The Champions League final, a good game but I'm lost without my live football to go to on Saturdays. Roll on the 2013/14 season which will be my 30th year of going and my 29th year as a season ticket holder.

    C'mon you Yellows.

3 folks in that car..only one shouting like a warped hyeana....I know its serious...but does he have to shout so loudly...The other aint...maybe he thinks the louder he shouts the safer he'll be...He's definately not British...I'd be worried about my brolly turning inside out..But I certainly would not scream...I could always buy a new brolley...besides...People here would tut and tell me they would not keep my place in the Queue if I left.
