Hi Jeff, I know of the Duke movies you speak of. Don't buy those as they are crappy copies of whatever movies are on them. These are what they call: Public Domain Movies, which means that anyone can copy them and sell them. The sad thing is, is that none of those who sell these, will spend the money to restore these movies. Also, many of the movies will be some that are so crappy - which I found out when I bought a Western 4 pack - tried to watch and then donated them to the Library. Anyway, if interested in a good deal on many of Duke's films from the 1930's, go to Best Buy (if one is in your area) and only pick up either the ones listed as Double Feature, or the 16 movie set, that comes in a John Wayne embossed tin box. I have this set and thought these are not restored, but seem to have the best quality of those I have seen. Also, I like that tin box-which is a great Duke collectable. These sets sell for about $16.00 or so bucks. Im still watching season 3 of: The Andy Griffith Show. Gomer and Goober make their first appearances during this season. PS: By the way, on those Public Domain movies: Wayne Enterprises is trying to get the rights to those films and are currently fighting it out in Court, against the many companies that are churing out unrestored versions of Duke's early Westerns. These battles will probably go on for years. :-((
I remember watching Battleship Potempkin years ago and recall the side of beef they wanted the sailors to eat that was full of worms and the fool doctor came out and said it was OK to eat ! Of course if I saw what went into sausage I and many others would refuse to eat that also.
{{{I saw the restored version-restored by some film preservation place in Germany. They did a geat job of it.}}} Just about finished watching season 3 of: The Andy Griffith Show.
Back to the movie for some bits I considered rather humorous. The local French Police commander had a Blue max and the wicked SS-Oberst naturally a Knight´s Cross . I wonder when they will make a movie where all the nazis either have a Blue max or a KC.... ------------- and the serious bit: Some of the people he helped out: ...succeeded in spiriting out of France individuals including the painters Marc Chagall, Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp, the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, the writers Andre Breton, Heinrich Mann and Leon Feuchtwanger, the poet Franz Werfel and Ms. Arendt.
Saw The Last Days of Sophie Scholl last night. Sophie and her brother were masterminds of the White Rose anti-Nazi movement in Germany, and were guillotined on 22/2/43. I already knew the story, but this was a cracker of a movie. Julia Jentsch played Sophie.
Been watching Strafbat again, a fairly good series about a Soviet penal battallion. Quite a few minor errors and a couple of major ones but it is an interesting series and well worth a look.
Since my last post, I have watched: Hell To Eternity w/ Jeffrey Hunter, The Fighting 69th w/ James Cagney, Allegheny Uprising w/ Duke, saw the first teo parts of the 8 part maxi-series called: The Winds of War--which is most excellent by the way and finally: started watching season 4 of: The Andy Griffith Show. ~WHEW~
Saw Das Boot last night for the 5th time. Excellent movie. Everytime I watch it I find something new in it. BTW The book is even better.
A Bridge too Far the other night not sure about the dodgy German Armour. Still a great film for it's time.
Yes - I saw ABTF was on and thought 'Oh well, I'll watch ten minutes' and ended up watching for an hour-and-a-half.... I could turn the sound down and dub in all the voices myself by now....some parts of the film are indeed dodgy ( and Elliott Gould, plain awful ) but the good bits ( like Edward Fox as Horrocks ) are very good indeed !
Will be watching the final chapter (part 7) of: The Winds of War, tonight. After that, i'll be working on the twelve parts to: War and Remembrance.
Am now watching 'Reign of the Gorgoyles' on Sci-Fi. The SS bring some gorgoyles back to life and they go out on a killing spree. They kill both allies and Germans. Has a lot of CG aircraft. Has the Gorgoyles attacking P-51s, B-17s and Ju-88's. A real dumb movie but interesting use of CG.
Right now, I'm watching 'The Sea Wolves' - Gregory Peck, David Niven (both a bit older after that fracas at Navarone!), Trevor Howard, Patrick Macnee - all the good old guys, plus Roger Moore. Pretty good - claims to be based on a true story. -whatever -Lou
Not a war film, I know, but the other night I watched Quatermass 2. It all started with Lost in Space and Star Trek when I was a kid, you know.....Sad or wot? Anyway in Quatermass the "zombies" possessed by the aliens were all wearing German M44 blouses and trousers, with insignia removed and blouses buttoned to the neck, and German leather ammo pouches and yokes.
Lost in Space was a cool TV show ! I wish they would show it again or at least show the last show. Did they ever get rescued ? Dr Smith and the Robot were cool.
I am not Terry !!!!!!!!!!! That is the other TA. I have alot more class and dequorum than that person. Now you have ruined my whole Sunday.
Humble apologies, my dear chap! I actually deleted it soon afterwards, but forgot about the time difference.....
