People as far away from the Nazi party as possible. People to keep the genocidal maniac elements on a tight leash. If possible, the SS shouldn't be involved at all. IIRC, Army Group Centre had at least some decent people in it, so folks like von Bock should be given greater power. Can we replace the Fuhrer here? :p

In terms of the numbers game, the best and probably the only chance the Germans had was to turn the war in the East to one of liberation, not annihilation.

Also, Rommel's really overrated. A good small unit commander, but an army group?

I included Bock. Then again Rommel was one of the best tacticians Germany had. The Soviets had only a handful of good strategists such as Zhukov, Koniev, and Popov. I would try to outwit them early.

Rommel was a good tactician, but a mediocre strategist. And the Soviets were outwitted early anyway. It's not clear at all to me what good an at-the-time inexperienced tank division commander (for whom, in hindsight, had a weakness in grasping issue of logistics, and was prone to overambition) can do to genuinely enhance the big picture, especially once General Winter saps away the ability of the Wermacht to perform the mobile manuevers Rommel was fond of.

    Commander in Chief - Manstein
    Ostfront commander - Guderian
    Heeresgruppe Nord - von Bock
    Heeresgruppe Mitte - Model
    Heeresgruppe Sud - Kesselring

And Hitler would be their staff dishwasher, waterboy, floor polisher and possibly the vet for their horses. Well, this is just MY OPINION and does not aim to offend Hitler supporters.
I would have wanted to support Guderian with his suggestion of piercing straight to Moscow. The 4th Panzer could have been assigned to AG Center and AG North could have been left with a pz div or so.
Or, Hitler could have focused instead on Egypt, capturing it and driving the British to the gulf of aden. Again, this is just my opinion and is based on JFC Fuller's idea (The second world war).

In all seriousness, I believe that Hitler had the best men on the job. Hitler's decision to replace some of them however, might be another story.
